Hose Clamp Thoughts
While were on the hose topic lets talk about their clamps.
Just an FYI:
I just received two repro tower upper and lower radiator hose clamps and two repro big block by pass hose clamps from the vendors.
The repro by pass hose clamps are stamped Wittek 37, it should be stamped 10 at least for an attempt at accuracy, no biggy.
It looks like the various vendors all list the same repro Wittek clamps.
Being polite, They are all **** poor quality looking repops.
They are about the flimsiest things I've ever seen or held.
I'm doubtful they can be tightened down enough to prevent leaks before breaking?
Has anybody else tried these repro clamps and had success?
I'm striving to represent the car correctly under the hood as it was in 68.
Not numbers matching concerned etc... just an accurate look for posterity.
Feed back welcome on clamps.

BTW, those tower clamps originally were trash., and we tossed them and put on worm drive clamps the first hose change when these cars were new. They don't come off well if you don't do it right, and were kind of a "one use only" clamp.
If you loosen them all the way, and collapse them with a socket, you "could" save some of them.

Thanks Big2bird,
I'm kinda thinking I wasted a few bucks but too much as they were not expensive.
I got all new hoses to go on soon, just thought I'd add the orig. style clamps for a vintage look. If they are going to be a problem, I can
understand why they were phased out by 69.

On the hose thing, I am impressed with newer hoses. I had a 2003 Silverado for 15 years and 185,000 miles. I NEVER changed one hose.
You could NOT get away with that "back in the day."
BUT, that truck never leaked oil on the hoses like these old cars did. The oil would soften them up in a hurry.

So true,
I got 100k out of Radiator hoses on a 2003 Lexus.
I got 103K out of the Kevlar timing belt too.
I remember at 70k you needed head work on most GM cars.

I need to replace the lower radiator hose on my 81. I searched for a new hose with the anti-collapse spring but could not find one at any of the local parts stores. The counter person told me that the new hose is reinforce so the spring is not needed. I'm not sold on his answer, do any of you have thoughts on this?

You don't need a coil in the hose. This was never the intended purpose. Here's a good article.

the spring was in there to prevent the suction of the water pump sucking in the hose. I have seen this happen on race engines without the support inside.
