C3 1978 Winshield replacement
My 78 original windshield glass has streaks inside the glass. Need to replace. Anyone else replace theirs? Thoughts on the best way to proceed? Can the local glass place handle this?

Hi B,
Replacing the windshield glass on 68-82 Corvettes requires that the stainless steel trim across the top of the windshield and the stainless steel reveal moulding and weatherstrip retainer be removed from the a-pillars.
Very few of the cars that the glass shops replace windshields on require this procedure. So it would be good to verify with the shop you chose that they have someone familiar with this procedure.
ALSO, the new glass must be spaced a small distance from the windshield frame when it is 'set' in place so the stainless trim on the top and sides of the windshield fit snuggly against the glass with no gaps.
The only way I know of doing this is to 'pre-fit' the glass and trim in order to measure what the proper distance is.
Then the seal can installed, the glass put in place, and the trim replaced.
So, take some time to find a shop that has someone who knows how to do this properly.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Welcome to the forum.
I don't see your location posted so maybe update your information so folks know where you are. If you can let the forum members know where you are located they may be able to get you a good reliable source for replacing your windshield. In my case I purchase the glass myself and then have it replaced here locally. I am fortunate to have a great gentleman that does these correctly here in Eastern Pennsylvania.
I have tried to remove them myself without success so now I just leave it to the professionals with the right knowledge and the right tools.
Good luck with your search.

The big chain glass places usually won't do older corvettes. Start calling local glass shops.

The guys in the little red trucks SafeLite will come to your house and replace. May take a few days to get a new unit ordered and shipped. You are better off having them come to your residence in case something goes wrong. What could go wrong? If they find any rust in the A pillars, work comes to a screeching halt. They claim they can not get a good seal unless everything is clean & rust-free. Its a liability thing.
I had to do some lite wire brush work with a Dremel Tool, then a coat of Rustoleum or POR. Let dry 24 hrs. Then they came back and finished the job. I was so glad the car was in my garage and not their shop for those few days.
All said and done, paying cash, about $260.

WINDSHIELD replacement
I live in Greenville, SC and had my 79 windshield replaced at a local shop here. No big deal. they cleaned and primed the channel. Had the correct replacement in stock. I think it was one of the chain outfits.

One of the problems is that new glass is thinner than the old stock windshield so proper spacing away from the frame is critical or you end up with a gap between the windshield and the stainless trim. I measured the original windshield on my 69 at .277 inches and the replacement glass was .205 inches. I think the original spacing was a 5/16" damming strip but I used a 3/8" strip to get trim spacing perfect.
