Default Is this right?

I have a 68C3 with a 283ci engine in it (obviously not original equipment).
When looking at the oil filter (to get a replacement) I noticed that I can clearly see what I believe to be the flywheel. (It has gear teeth on its edge.) Is this proper or is there a cover missing?

The photo was taken from the front of the car. Oil filter is the blue object in the upper right corner.

No that is not right. There should be a cover over it.

It's just missing the flywheel/inspection cover--not a huge deal...

you will have to R&I the starter when you get a shield to put on it...

something does not look right with the teeth on that flywheel !!! look it over carefully while you are in there.

Looks like the teeth have been around or a starter was not shimmed.

The teeth on that side of the flywheel are beveled that way so that the Bendix gear on the starter drive can easily engage with them.

You just need to clean that area free of rocks/debris that might damage the flywheel and install another inspection cover on the bell housing. There are several different configurations of inspection cover, depending on engine model. Most auto parts places should be able to order one for not much money.

Thanks everyone! Extremely helpful. I have contacted a transmission shop to look over my trannie and clutch (a new car to me). I will have them install the cover.

Hi, do you mind if I ask you how much the repair is/was to install the new flywheel cover? I’m looking at a’72 Coupe tomorrow and see that it is missing the cover as well. Thanks.
Joe

Kind of think the same thing. Could be the angle of the pic but looks like more than the inspection cover is missing. Also, if you look closely, the flex plate teeth are caked in dirt. Nothing a couple of cans of Brakcleen can’t fix.

The second one is missing the auto trans cover. Actually easier to install because you don't have to remove starter. 4 small bolts hold it in place.

Having either one of them off wouldn't worry me a bit. I would prefer to let the heat off the clutch and the converter. I'm not driving it off road so not worried about what might get in there.

Joe, I hope that you don't think that is a '72 Corvette Coupe...

It's missing the major part of the frame the '72 Corvette came with. It does have sub-frame connectors from the front sub-frame to I would suppose the rear sub-frame. A Camaro or Deuce perhaps?

It should take a dust cover such as this plastic one that Summit sells for about $31...

I was sent pictures from a Camaro by mistake. I know now that it’s not a Corvette. Thanks though for catching that.
Here’s the correct one.

Probably the same plate Joe. The Camaro shows a Turbo 350 in it while the Corvette has a Turbo 400 in it.

This cover is powdercoated and metal...
