Default She's alive after 30 years of sitting!

Finally got this '71 454 turned over after pulling it from a barn last June. I finally got it going but she is making a lot of clanking sounds in the mufflers. Not sure if that is from sitting or a larger issue. With any luck, the video link:

Way to go man! Now rebuild the brakes, front suspension, replace the tires, cross your fingers that trailing arms are good to go.

The baffles inside the mufflers may rust and come loose inside and can make quite a racket. Let the mufflers get up to operating temperature and see if the noise decreases.

Kind Regards,

Bill

Thanks! Brakes are next on the list and then tires. It would be great to get it back on the road!

Bill, thanks for the info. I will let it run tonight when I get home from work to get it to temperature, hopefully that will help!

Definitely sounds like a baffle in muffler banging around.

Changing the old mufflers will help.

Congrats on getting her started.

Mine sat for around 27 years in a garage and almost every rubber and gasket has deteriorated. Let's hope yours wasn't in that bad a shape.

almost sounds like you have a couple plug wires on the wrong plugs.

Your pumping a fuel/air mix into the cylinders, and if that plug misfires then that mix goes into the exhaust system where it is ignited by the flame trail of the following cylinders. Get some good plugs in there, and ensure all the plug wires are routed to the correct cylinders, and the popping sound should go away....

I double checked the plug wires and they are in the correct position.

Bill, there is a lot of clanking and popping while letting it come up to temperature, is that normal? Sorry for the question, it’s new to me so I thought I would ask. I appreciate the help.

Rodents sometimes store stuff in the mufflers. Clanking and popping isn’t normal when starting a C3. What have you done to the engine to get it running?

How did you determine that the points/distributor were correctly set up? I’m guessing that the problem is in the ignition. The distributor is a tooth off, the wires are in the wrong place on the distributor. I chased a similar problem on a SBC that was due to the mechanic having the spark plug wires one terminal off.

This is a good point. I replaced the distributor and points. In addition I changed the gas tank and oil as well. I put the new distributor on following the pattern of the old one. I checked the firing order schematic tonight and it appears that the wires are in the correct position but I could have something off. I will double check it tomorrow night. I am learning so I greatly appreciate the advice.

Get under the car when running. Right under the door. You will be able to tell if noise is from in front of behind you. Engine sounds pretty good. That clang is in the exhaust.
