Default Throttle stuck, almost died

i was approaching an underpass and the tradition is to drop the hammer under the bridge and make lots of noise
as I approach, I hit the gas and acelerate through the tunnel, as I approach the light on the other side of the tunnel, i go to let off the the gas, but the car kept accelerating (upwards of 70mph), I jammed the break and jarred the throttle loose, while swerving around the car parked at the red light

this happened before I had the engine rebuilt too, the same carb and springs on the throttle were used after the rebuild, so I'm guessing I should look at those springs before i drive the car again (i didn't get a chance in the dark last night)
:cry :cry :cry :cry :cry

Close call, man. Glad to hear you got out of it in time. I've heard some people talk about using two springs on the throttle just to be on the safe side.

Goodluck,
Matt

wow! That could turned out bad. Check those throttle springs, sounds like they got hung up. Kick it into neutral if it happens again. You might not be so lucky.

from factory there is 2 springs. incase one breaks. I think your problem is in your throttle cable. Tonight if I don't buy that truck I'll come by we can have a look. first we'll press on your gas pedal and inspect the carb so see where it wants to hang up. Maybe theres a vaccuum line or somehting that it gets hung on. if that checks out, we remove the springS and feel the resistance on the throttle cable. just pull and push on it. if thats the problem we'll squirt in some oil or K-Y Jelly or whatever while you order a new cable. Plan B: next time the throttle sticks on the road, open your door and bale out in the fetal position. Hope for the best.

thanks bloodvette, i appreciate the concern, we will look at that tonight

here's a plan, 24 of beer, a carb rebuild kit, a 26oz of rye, a throttle cable, a pack of smokes and a CD player........we can get lots of work done

Happen to me also, mine was the pedal catching on the floor side carpet due to linkage not in the correct hole on throttle arm.

Sticking throttle. Hmm, maybe I should keep a stock L48. Won't have to worry about it overpowering the brakes!

You were pretty lucky there.

I had this happen to me also, but luckily on a backroad. After repainting and swapping out some parts.. my father re-installed the entire arm on the carb upside down, so when you went WOT, the entire assembly would bind and get caught up and stick at WOT. I kicked it in neurtral right around 70 and went for the ride of my life getting her stopped. To add insult to injury.. I was so shooken up that when I jumped out, I seared my leg on the sidepipe :cuss After all this, I had to sit there and reinstall the arm the correct way with the 'spare' tools laying in the cargo trays on the side of the road, on a hot engine in the middle of summer in FL.
