Default Engine for my 1968 Stingray

Is this a good engine for my car https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...0009/overview/ ? Will it fit? is it possible to replace the flexplate with a flywheel? I really want it to be manual. I also have a problem with my transmission. It's an muncie M-21. It is no good in 4th gear. Does anyone know if that is hard to fix. If you have a solution or another great engine, please link me. I am gratefull for any answer.

Are you outside the US?
That motor will work, know it uses a 1 pc rear main seal and take notes how it is balanced. Youll need to get the proper flywheel and clutch setup so thats not an issue, yes they will bolt up.
Does your transmission work right in all other gears?

Do you have a153 or 164?? tooth flywheel? All things to know before you call thier tech line. Maybe someone here will have part numbers for you.

thanks for great answer. I live in Norway btw. I know little about the transmission, but it is no good in 4th. It is my dads car, and I am trying to convince him to fix it. I am going to work in the summer brake and save up some money. Does anyone have a good tip on how to convince my dad? Haha, a bit stupid question, but im desperate

What will you guys be using the car for? Just spirited street driving, staying below 5000 rpm? If you want to use the factory carburetor and accessories, you might consider this 383 engine. It has quite a bit more torque at lower RPM's making it fun for street use where you are not going that fast anyway. Runs on low octane fuel plus its ~$400 dollars less.

Just throwing this out as an option in case you are not set on going with a serpentine belt conversion. Just noticed, looks like it has a long water pump on it, so you would have to switch that out with a corvette short design water pump to match the factory accy. brackets.

What is wrong with the engine? With shipping to Europe, you are probably better off repairing an engine that is already in your possession. But if it is Dad's money, he might prefer buying this new engine instead. https://www.ebay.com/p/General-Motor....c100855.m4779 Probably Mexican built Chevy, but built by GM in a GM plant. Now, you have a tranny problem. The teeth that lock the input shaft to the shift slider on the main shaft are shot. So you get 1,2,3,neutral. You need to get the trans out and get it apart. Once again, a whole trans to Europe is expensive, but smaller parts are easier to deal with shipping.

If you are from Norway maby you should buy a pro build engine here from Sweden. It should be wayyyy cheaper since the Swedish krona is low now

Rebuildng both will save you money. You can take apart the m21 and check the gears and see what you need. there are many good youtube channels with great information. And you can replace only what you need or replace everything. which is what I did after looking at the gear teeth and the sychchros. I didnt want to repalce parts again in a few years.


I rebuilt my 327 with everything new for just over $4000.00 dolllars, but you need a few tools that you may or may not be able to rent over there, but if you have a good local machine shop they can do the honing of the cylinders and you will just have to do the reassembly. If the cylinders are too worn they can do the boring as well. If your heads need a valve job they could do that too...they are both pretty inexpensive jobs in the US.

Before you purchase the motor make sure the crank has the hole for the pilot bushing or you will not be able to use it with the straight drive transmission. That is unless you want to change the crank out.

All crankshafts have pilot bushing recess machines into them.

Since when? I haven't messed with any thing since around 84 or so, Up until that time we took some motors out of auto cars and some didn't have the recess. Remember a guy that cut the end off the trans so he could put a 4 speed stick in one. It ended up vibrating and messed up the front bearing in the stick trans.
