"Shut Down" lyrics...a replacement for "Little Red Corvette"
Hi all,
I thought the younger guys who may have never heard the Beach Boy's "Shut Down"
song might like to know the lyrics to it. So here goes. I follow with an explaination of what they are describing...
Tach it, up tach it up, buddy gonna shut you down...
It happened on the strip where the road is wide,
Two cool shorts standing side by side,
Yeah my fuel-injected Stingray and a four thirteen,
A revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean.

Declinin' numbers at an even rate,
At the count of one we both accelerate,
My Stingray is white, my slicks are startin' to spin,
But the four thirteen's really diggin in.
Gotta' be cool now, power shift here we go...
The Super Stock starts whinin' out and movin'

Now the explaination of the lyrics for this cryptic (for young guys) song:
"It happened on the strip where the road is wide"
[That would be 1/4 mile DRAG STRIP. Unlike Jan and Dean, who raced on the street in Dead Man's Curve, the Beach Boys knew that a curve at the end of a drag race is BAD NEWS]
"Two cool shorts standing side by side"
[In the 60's they called their hot rods "shorts", at least in California]
"Yeah my fuel-injected Stingray and a four thirteen"
[Now we get to the good stuff...The Vette would be a '63 Stingray with Rochester "dog house" fuel injection. Fuely heads. Solid lifters. High compression. HOT stuff. The four thirteen is either a '62 Plymouth Fury or Dodge Polara with a 413 wedge. VERY HOT STUFF. Actually, a drag-only vehicle not meant for the street.]

[Evidently this is how the drag race in California was initiated. Like a countdown on a space launch, 5,4,3,2,1, GO. In Illinois we just beeped the horn and on the third beep we GO. Odd, because this line seems to indicate a street race. Even back in the mid-60's they had Christmas trees. Before Christmas trees they waved a flag. Oh well.]

[See above concerning "Declinin". If he's accelerating on the count of one it sounds like they are racing from a roll instead of a standing start. More street racing stuff...tsk tsk ;)]

[This part is a bit confusing. The Beach Boys sing this song pretty fast, and they're either saying my Stingray is WIDE or my Stingray is WHITE. I'm guessing white, since white Vettes were pretty popular back then. Wide also doesn't make a lot of sense.
"But the four thirteen's really diggin in"
[Simple...the four thirteen is getting good traction.]
"Gotta' be cool now, power shift here we go"
[Power shift...I don't know if they even do this any more. It was risky business back then.
When you "power shift" with a stick shift you shift gears WITHOUT using the clutch at all.
You just RAM the shifter from gear to gear with the accelertor held to the floor the whole time. It makes a stick shift faster than an automatic. The Muncie trasnmission was excellent for doing this. The Saginaw trasmission usually ended up in pieces all over the drag strip.
Guys even removed synchro rings from their tranamissions to make power shifting easier to do. We were pretty nuts back then :)]

[The Mopar the Vette is racing was in the Super Stock class for NHRA.]

[A method to get traction when the tires are spinning. Back then slicks would go up in smoke quite often because they didn't have wrinkle walls or special compounds like today.
By "riding" the clutch he is letting it slip to let the tires get a better grip.]

The pressure plate is getting hot because of the "ridin the clutch" thing. It's not locked up but is spinning against the clutch disc. "My machine's too much" is an expression used back then. "Too much" = awesome, way cool, far out, Boss.

[Holy smokes...two Carter AFB carburetors = 1250 cfm. Dang straight those quads are sucking down gas.]
"And now thirteen's lead is startin' to shrink"
[The Vette is catching up]

[That's putting it mildly. Ram-inducted Mopars CONSISTENTLY turned in the low 11's at the strip back then and dominated their class in drag racing. And it was a full-bodied all steel car! Very few of them ever made it to the street. They were just too radical to be fun to drive.]

Well....yeah...it WAS a cool motor. It still IS a way cool motor.
Advertised horsepower was 375 in it's hottest version. But...unless the car was REALLY modified beyond what rolled off the showroom floor, it wouldn't stand a chance against a stock wedge. However, before all the fuelly fans jump in my poop, note that they say
"my slicks are startin' to spin". That WOULD give an indication that this is NOT a STOCK fuelly Vette. So it is possible they beat the Mopar :)
Now why did I go to all this effort? Three reasons..
1) There might be some guys out there that never heard the Beach Boys sing Shut Down. As I went through verse by verse I must say it gave me goosebumps to read the words.
Deja Vu all over again.
2) There are probably some older guys that never really got the words straight.
I think I'm pretty accurate on my translation.
3) Prince's "Little Red Corvette" song...excuse me while I wretch in disgust.
I doubt if that dimwit would know a Corvette if it ran over his foot. Why Chevrolet is using the lyrics from that song in their Corvette advertising is beyond me. Why do they need filth to sell Corvettes??? Especially when they could have someone write a song like Shut Down only updated to today's Vette...or use the original.

I guess I should ad that Shut Down is still available on CD from Amazon.com
Best one to get is the Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe" album. All their best car songs are on there. :D

Thanks. Very much appreciated. Now if you could find the lyrics to Jan and Dean's "I Gotta Drive" I will sleep tonight. Classic but not well known song from them. Typical of the 1960s period. A guy trying to impress his girl at the track: "She loves me now but she's gonna love me more. Because today I drove like I never drove before." Simple times; I miss them.
Been waiting for this day and my engine's tuned up and she runs real fine.
There's my Girl. Wow, she looks pretty! She came to watch me race today at Drag City....The last thing I have to do is win this race...I'm tacking seven grand but it's not enough....but I powershift down and slip inside. And... today I drove like I never drove before."
The guy gets the girl in traditional 1960s style. Love that song!

BSeery: My friend...I owe you BIG TIME! I just re-listened to Shut Down again (for the zillionth time) and your lyrics are RIGHT ON! DO you realize how many years I've been singing along to that song using the WRONG words???? You made my day and I can't thank you enough.

I completely missed the "Super Stock Dodge is winding out in low".

The ONLY part I dispute is the final "Shut it off shut it off buddy NOW I shut you down". It's VERY possible there are different ending versions of this song. I have heard Shut Down with both a repeat of the the openning line at the end (that's what mine has and it's VERY clear) and the version you posted. Jan and Dean did this with their songs too. Album versions and single versions. A good example of this is Dead Man's Curve. In one version they sing "I flew past the fresh rods at Crescent Heights, and all the Jag could see were my SIX tail lights"...
in the other version they sing "all the Jag could see were my Frenched tail lights". Frenched tail lights were popular in the 60's. It involved recessing the tail light lens further into the body.
Anyway, thanks again for posting those corrections. They're great!

paul79: just so you know....that is NOT the REAL Drag City album/cassette.
That is a compilation of some of their car songs. The real Drag City album has another excellent songe called "Hot Stocker" about a '57 Chevy with Fuel Injection and a "bang shift hydro". Excellent song. I have the CD on order from Amazon.com.

Yes....I am. But I am ALSO an open-minded Old Geezer. Today I bought that fruit's Greatest Hits album just to get Little Red Corvette and listen for myself. The bad news is it IS a filthy song. The GOOD news is the filthy words are so mumbled and incoherent that all you really hear is...

I can live with that and I semi-withdraw my original complaint about this song. Just don't ever let your wife/girfriend/kids get hold of the lyrics or listen too closely to the rest of the song ;)
