Default LS6 or Torker II intake mainfold?

Hello!
I have completely rebuilt my L36 and stroked it to 489ci. Stock (polished) oval port heads, stock intake mainfold with stock quadrajet. Runs really good and strong, but now I want to go to the next step. Bought an AED double pumper carb and for use it, I need another intake mainfold that fits under the stock BigBlock hood. So my choices are:
  • Edelbrock Torker II intake, matches the oval port heads, but it is a single plane
  • LS6 intake, has rectangular ports, dual plane.
Is the Torker II really as bad as every claims? On the other side, if I use the LS6 intake, it doesn´t match the oval ports of the heads.
Can anybody recommend me which one to use?

Thanks, Günther

I've seen some dyno tests on the Torker II on a big block years ago..it wasn't the best...but it wasn't the end of the world either. Seems like some tests I saw on the low rise LS-6 intake was about 20 HP or so less than the 427/425 style intake on a 454. The tall one can be helped a lot with some divider work...but not sure how the short one responds. Probably similar.

A 489 is going to pull some airflow. What sort of RPM range?

Id use the Torker, you got enough stroke for low end , if you can get more air through it even better.
not every ideal combo makes tons of low end, spinnin aint winnin. Purposely put together something that doesnt make tons of low end so it hooks and still pulls hard to redline.

The Torker II is a small plenum short/small runner intake. Might spend a few hours opening it up to help things.

Looking at the Edelbrock catalog it seems the dual quad C-66-O is only 1/2" taller than the Torquer II and only 3/4" taller than the stock corvette intake. It makes more power than the Torquer II also. Something to consider if you want a performance improvement.

Jim, right now it pulls hard up to 5500rpm. It 's not neccessary to spin more rpm. So the target would be 5500-6000 rpm. More important is torque.

Edl TQ II is NOT a tuned runner port. I install Weiand Stealth manifolds on stock 427 and 454 BBC's

I would run the LS6 reproduction..... I have the Torker 2 on my 72 LS5 and it's a POS.

As far as fitting under the stock BB hood. I put a slightly thicker insulator gasket on mine with the Torker 2 and now the wing nut touches the bottom of the hood. There is no room for any manifold even a mm taller.

you cant? run a rectangle port manifold on a oval port engine, wiend used to make a oval port manifold that flowed as good as a rec port manifoldbut that was 30+ years ago

It may not be perfect..but it's been done a gazillion times and works just fine.

Don't automatically assume torque is lost with a bigger intake. Either port the heck out of a Torker II, or cut divider down in an LS-6 pancake. That 489 wants air....

I haven't measured one lately...but what about the ancient Tarantula and Torkers? I'm thinking they are a little too tall.

Jim, you say cut the divider down on the ls6. I have a milling machine, so that is not a problem at all. Just say what to or maybe send me a drawing.
And about the torker, what should be done on it to work properly?

My 79 has a very tall single plane intake with a 1/2 inch wood thermal spacer. I had to replace my 3 inch tall open element dropped base air cleaner with a 2 inch filter for hood clearance. To get free flowing air I use a filter top

Ck out this site....he's done some great work. Read on through it to see intake pics of a tall one. I'd do same thing.

The Torker….I'd open the runners larger as they entered the plenum as much as possible and blend the tops of runners into plenum area. Only so much room to play with on it.

Jim, they milled out the divider, so the ls6 becomes a single plane mainfold. In this case I could buy the torker, this is also a single plane. Sorry for the questions, but I'm not very familiar with intakes and don't want to spend money on a wrong intake. So where are the advantages on the ls6 inyake?

The runners are the legs the air runs down from carb base to intake ports. They named it the Tarantula cuz of the 8 legs-runners. As far as oval-rect manifold mismatches, they have been done BOTH ways on big blocks with good results. I have a mercruiser LS6 copy intake on an L29 (96-00 oval 454) and it is a very well behaved med performance setup.

It's still a dual plane intake.....just has a larger plenum. If you look at an RPM Air Gap you'll see they've notched the divider also. You get longer runners (the passages from the plenum to the head port) which enhance torque as compared to an "X" style single plane. That's why they get taller sometimes...trying to have the advantages of high RPM power with a single plane....but with longer runners to enhance power below peak.

Gunther,

I have an LS-6 repro on my 496 with rec port Edelbrock heads. The dual plane is a must if you're driving it in town or low speeds such as that. I didn't see mention of your carb size but Jim is right, that 489 needs air and a lot of it.
Since we are limited under the hood, the choices are slim. Take the dual plane LS-6 and be happy. It's certainly not the best choice of a BB intake for the engine but it's the best of the two options. With a single plane and mild build (just a guess) you'll have to drive it like you stole it in town with a TQ2/single plane.

Lot's of folks have the rec port LS-6 on Oval port heads....non-issue mate. First impression is impossible when you look at the match but it works well.

Cheers,

Ryan
