I have a 1982. Am i missing something or do you have to pull the dash to replace speakers? i have seen earlier models with removable grill guards l!

the top cover just gets pushed to the side and then pop it up. The speaker can be unscrewed with a small screwdriver or 1/4 ratchet .

You don't need to pull the dash to replace the speakers... Years ago we welded a socket to an old imported wrench.... this allows us to remove the screws that retain the speakers without any issue.

So.. you might look for an old socket that fits the screws, I believe it's 1/4" but I could be wrong and can only check the size tomorrow morning... Then possibly find a small ratchet or do like we did and weld the socket to an old wrench.... The screens on your car will pop out easily... but don't take the entire dash out to replace the speakers..... it's too easy to work around this.

If there are no removable grills then someone has put a plastic dash cover/cap over the dash.

This is not the best picture ever taken, but here you can see the panel that should be visible above your speaker (and the outline of the speaker below). Sliding the panel to either side should let you pop it out, either with your finger or a screwdriver. Perhaps you have a cover over the top of the dash, as Gunfighter13 described.

The grille picture above shows that there should be a removable grille in the dash, like others.... I think you might have a dash cap on the dash pad. If this is the case, in most instances this is held on by silicone glue and possibly you could remove it without breaking it. Post up a pic in a similar fashion as the one above and I can tell you if this is the case. Below is a grille removed from the dash pad.
