I need to replace both the battery and all the cables on my 69 project
I want to us a top mount battery and I want the cables to be long enough
I am not fighting with them all the time
It will have a 383 small block in it
Any suggestions?
There are some cable crimping tools available that do a decent job of making your own cables. Get the good cable,make them as long as you want and it will cost less then something that says corvette. The tools usually go for around $35. Do some homework and it's pretty easy to do a good job
Wire size is 2AWG, I use welding cable wire available from welding supply stores. The reason I use their wire is because the wire has very small copper strands. Electricity flows around the wire strands not through it, with more strands it is capable of conducting more amperage and to boot it's more flexible for fishing through those small clamps in the tranny tunnel. As far as batteries go I just run the highest CCA battery. I get mine from our local F&F store last one was around $80, the service life is a whopping 4 years but I used to get expensive batteries and they only lasted 4 years also I suspect it is because of the limited use our corvettes see. T
is that the exact style GM used that far back? I didn't realize they were using side post that long ago
I found a 1970 tech article covering GMs introduction of the side post battery for the 1971 model year. Pontiac offered them before the other GM lines. I didn't think the design was that old.

My 69 has side terminals. Much more difficult to work with than the top post style. T
I found the Chinese handle crimpers to bend after a few crimps and the adjustable jaws stops adjusting...A better crimper tool AND it's cheaper is the "hammer type" for about $20
GM used 2/0 till about 74- then upped it to 1- so it certainly wouldn't hurt running a larger cable. I'm running 1/0 as I have added electric fans and some other stuff- some will say it's overkill...
When you buy the cable- check out a car stereo shop - as they will have the fine strand battery cable and better connectors.

oh wow!! I thought it was a mid 80's design, but this is my first 70's car, and I don't go to car shows
My 69 is on the top. Your local shop will have the crispers,can’t cost that much,my 07 gmc
has long cables also the shape just crimped on new terminals it’s been fine for 6years and counting.
