Default HP Power Steering Pump w/Borgeson?

The power steering pump on my'81 has a leak around the reservoir. While I have the pump off to repair, I thought I might upgrade to this pump. I know. It's expensive as hell. I have the Borgeson conversion on the car. Your comments are welcome.

Careful with pressures, the Borgeson already may be sensitive to higher pressures and they have pressure limiting washers to use if that is the case. As this pump is just a replacement for the original reservoir (not a later LS style pump), I can't imagine any benefit over the stock replacements unless the local rebuilds are unreliable. IMHO...

Thanks for the reply slofut.
Sounds like a telephone call to Borgeson might be a good idea.

Please let us know what they say. I just replaced the leaking pump in my 79 (Borgeson box) with a rebuilt Delco from Rock Auto. Not a small amount of work, but it works so far.

Steering is light as it is, so more pressure is unlikely to be what you need.

If I'm going to burn $200 I'd rather have a reservoir and pulley installed.
This may be a better choice...

I did some checking on the pressures put out by power steering pumps made by AGR and Borgeson. It seems the pressure ratings for the AGR pumps were higher. The AGR came in at 1500 psi. The Borgeson pump is rated at 1200 psi. This tells me that Borgeson saw no need to boost pressures beyond 1200 psi. They even offer a high pressure bypass kit.

Your input please.

Depends if you have a hydroboost or not too. I'm going to use a pump off a 3/4 pickup as it has dual returns for PS & the HB. Also rated for 1500psi. IIRC the std Corvette pump was only about 1000psi due to the requirements of the slave cylinder.

I called Borgeson and got some information on pump pressures today.

The tech stated that the pump pressure of 1200 psi works best with the Borgeson conversion.

He gave me a part number of 800310 for the pump and 801001 for the pulley.

This is going to be on the back burner for a while longer it looks like.

Did you ask or did he tell you what the stock GM pumps out out? Those are $50- or $75- at Rock Auto. You'll need a pulley, though.

I read somewhere that the factory pumps are 800 psi. I didn't ask that question though.
I just ordered the pump and pulley from Summit.
I guess I'll see if there is enough of a difference to tell after changing over.
