Default '73 Ducted Hood Air Door Help

Installing this guy. But how?
It's that big fat rubber gasket I'm struggling with. Should I attach it someway to the mechanism's frame first, as pictured? Or ....

... should I fit the gasket in the hole first? Rather a bitch to reach and work on. And if it's not positioned right, it might come off the top edge of the mechanism forward, and maybe block the door from opening when actuated. GM's 1973 maintenance manual just covers operation/troubleshooting, and the ***. manual doesn't go into installation detail. Anyone know the trick/procedure? Would really like to find out.

Thanks much.
Steve

Default Figured it Out

Remnants of glue gave me a clue.

And, I found this page in the ASM.

Although really small, the hood's Seal Position Beads are there if you look closely.

Now I know: Contact cement the seal into place first, and install the Air Control Unit second.

Default Air Control Mod

BTW, this wiring "clamp" helps position the power wires for one-person installation of the Air Control.

Nice write up and good catch on the glue bead. Years ago I pulled out the flapper, got the solenoid working, reinstalled and it hasn’t worked since. This motivated me to go back and try again.

Cleaned & cemented the seal contact areas.
Cemented the seal .....

Stuffed seal ends and lip in place .......

Should have stuffed the ends in more, because it made the unit hard to set in place.

Then shoved the unit INTO the seal's end block, set the unit IN AND FORWARD in order it engage the seal properly. Started the first bolt at this end too.

Then the rest of the bolts in. Also, a good time to put power to the solenoid to make sure door is operational. Fitting that flimsy plastic grill is sort of a pain: The center Rubber Bumper complicates it. Gotta find those 2 acorn nuts.

Finally attached the wiring.

And I think I'm done with it.

Well done Steve. Mine works well and hopefully I do not have to go thru what you did. Just think of all the extra power you will get at WOT now 😂

Strictly vogue ain't it.
Buddy had a '77/78 or so Burt Reynolds Firebird. Got a real kick outta showing friends a similar flapper valve open up in front of us when the accelerator went to the floor.
Thanks for the compliment Fran.
