Default Yellow underneath Orange Flame, WTH?

Hello all,

My 75 L48 coupe was originally Orange Flame and still is. However, where the paint is chipping off it's got a yellow color underneath with what looks like dark factory primer underneath. Was that from the factory or is it possible that someone painted an orange car yellow, then painted it back to the factory orange color?

The car is bone stock in every other way so I'm thinking it's a primer, but just not sure.

Any ideas?

GM did not use yellow primer.. your car was painted and then painted again if the code says orange

When I worked at Chevy dealer, in the 70s , we repainted a few yellow and orange new cars that did not sell for a long time .. usually we went to black, or Charcoal and they sold right away.. orange was not a bit hit back then ...

Yep...bet it was changed twice. I found out my Red car was originally Blue. Seller said "respray" but did not disclose the color change.

Ontario Orange was the most popular color in 1972 adorning 18% of Corvettes sold.
That said, i think orange fell out of favor few years later, along with Harvest Gold, Autumn bronwn and Avacado green, which Chev put on their cars under different names in the early 1970s..

Ah yes....the "Earth" color movement. I had a particular fondness for my Coppertone 'fridge. Avacado green went out of favor pretty quickly. The oranges and yellows have held their own over the years.

It just seems so odd that the car could be so factory true in so many ways, and that they would start with a car with a not very popular color, paint it another not very popular color, and then paint it back. But I'm sure stranger things have happened.

Perhaps to get the color back to match the trim plate number?

What's wrong with this picture?

Well looks like that tag is from a 1968 Lemans Blue with the Medium Blue interior with some superhero deciding to repaint it red (who does that? That was one of the best vette colors ever).

Here's my trim tag. In looking more closely at it I'm feeling a little sheepish (like I said, I'm new to this thing). it looks like it was painted Flame Orange from the factory, repainted yellow (notice the yellow creeping in at the bottom, on the rivets, and a hint of yellow overspray on the medium saddle interior trim). It also seems unlikely the paint would be on the tag in the upper right and looking like it's creeping up and over the tag on the top. So I guess there's my answer. Some genius decided to paint the car yellow, and then another genius afterwards decided to go for a bargain paint job and repaint it the factory orange.

The good news is that's going will be one of the only and by far and away the worst mess I've got to undo on this car. The bad news is I either get to buy all the tools and materials and spray the car myself (which I'm hearing estimates in the $2-3K range and which I've never done), or pay between 7 and 12K for a paint job for a car that on it's best day won't be worth $20K.

Hmmmmmm......

Maybe I'll just touch it up and drive it for a while.

That's what I'd do. A good enough C3 on the road is worth more than a great C3 trapped in your garage!

Funny the things you notice were changed to our cars after 40-50 years. Here is my list on the 1968 after only 1 month of ownership:

1. Car exterior paint was blue...now red.
2. Car interior was blue now totally black (dash, doors, carpet, seats, etc.)
3. Hood is from a 73-76 model.
4. Have two driver seats (release latches are both on the left side). Edit: Nope...the way it came.
5. Two different pop up lamp assemblies...not sure which if any are original.
6. Engine is not the original 327 ci...has an engine code nobody yet can identify (V1022C2N).
7. Has a Camaro type round outside rear view mirror.
8. Has a tilt steering wheel from a later model.
9. No keys fit the two doors...likely doors are from another car.
10. Seems like every screw has been replaced by another type...mostly wood screws.

Good thing I bought this car to work on as a hobby and a 10/10 weekend driver and not to restore to original condition.

Redvette2 Your seats are meant to have both latches on the same side.

Indeed. I got mine for the same reasons but so far haven't experienced anywhere near that much "bubba" as TheCorvetteBen likes to call it.

The paint is the biggy, but pretty sure almost everything is original on the car. engine matches the vin, original rallye wheels, original interior, keys work and match, etc. The vapor barriers are gone on the doors so someone has been in to them at some point the the interior pull handle on the driver side is black, but i've gotta replace door panels anyway.

Can't get the key out of the ignition, multiple electrical things don't work (mice), multiple vaccum things don't work (time and mice),

The good news for you is your car is going to be worth $10K more than mine at every equivalent level of condition. It's probably worth every minute of your time.

Good luck!

You too....we will get there. As they say half the fun is the journey. I love this car...I have had C4, C5 and C6 models but this one has something special for me that the others did not.
