Hi, I'm looking to replace old and heavy starter with a mini and new starter.
Any suggestions? Also, looking at some catalogs, it seems there are different number of tooth's, how can I check what I've got?
thanks
Gents, thanks for all your good suggestions.
In the meantime I've found this Summit starter that seems to cover both 153 and 168 tooth flexplates... any commment on that?
Did you read the reviews?
It received a couple of poor reviews regarding gear engagements which would eliminate this starter as a choice for me.
You can get the correct Powermaster starter for your set up through Summit for close to the same price.

This is the one I got. It cranks my 496 over incredibly fast and it is adjustable to get it away from the headers if you have them.
Thanks for this suggestion...This One ^^^^^^^^looks like the one to get since it mimics the stock starter in looks and design, weighs 7.5 pounds and can spin an 18:1 compression motor and the price is Cheap>...............
For a 168 tooth flywheel, I like the late model GM starters.
The GM part # is 8000598 and the bolts are 12338064. Autozone part DLG9990S. 1995 Chevy truck (3/4 ton) with 7.4L. Love the Autozone Duralast Gold parts warranty. Had to get a new starter after 10 years. Cost me $0.00.
Just make sure you get the special bolts since they have standard threads and metric shanks.

I've been very happy with my PowerMaster. Even their less expensive one at $130 has no problem cranking my 10:1 454.
As for the GM starter, that what I had before and I can't recommend them anymore. There are 2 versions available at the parts stores, either rebuilt or new Chinese copy. Both use very weak plastic gears and I had several of them blow up after a year or two. Sure Autozone gave me another one for free, but wondering when it's going to blow up again gets old.

I agree^^^^^. I am not a fan, at all, of any of the mass market auto parts stores. Sure, they have great warranties but honestly, I am not interested in changing parts just because the failed part is a free replacement. I have to chuckle when folks say the part failed but i can get a new one for free as a replacement, especially with autozone C3 brake calipers...no thank you.
I will take a quality more expensive part all day over the cheap lifetime warranty junk parts....just me.
My time and labor is worth more than the lifetime warranty scam.
Reminds me of the lifetime warranty on FWD GM wheel bearing hubs for cheap at Autozone OR no warranty Timken/SKF wheel bearings that are 2-3 times as expensive BUT I change them once and that is it.......who wants to change FWD wheel bearing hubs often? not me!

Same issues with the Powermaster for me as well. Sits in a box in the garage as a spare if needed. The DB electrical one looks like the late 90's GM gear starter, just a cheaper copy.
The CVR is the only one I will use now........I have bolted one of these to three of my Vettes....big and small block and also my 82' C20 454 before I sold it.......none of these required shims and they spin the engines over like they have no plugs in them...........all you have to do is clock it correctly....which is easy.
I "second" the DB Electrical starters. They're $48. You can buy 3 or 4 of them for the price of a PowerMaster.
And they weight 7.5 lbs!!
I'm buying 2 of them and I'll just keep one stored away in the garage for when the plastic bits inside die. When they're this much cheaper than everything else and they fit well, I find it difficult to pay more for something else.
