Th350 anti rattle spring

Hi guys! What does the th350 anti clunk spring really do? I didn't have it in my gearbox as far as I know. Stripped it down, didn't see it. So, is it really needed? What does it exactly do? I know it prevents the sound, but does it do anything else? I'm sure I can probably live with a little noise, but wouldn't want to cause extra wear etc. I know, would be easy to get one..
