Default Great video about ajrothm's (Alan's) new 496

I was cruising through Youtube last night, as I often do in the evenings, when I saw a new video with a very familiar Vette featured in the still shot. It was a front end up shot that many of us have seen of ajrothm's '71 coming off the line at the dragstrip. The video features Alan's newly freshened 496 that has just been completed and run on the dyno- yes there is video of time on the dyno and it's badass! This beast has 10 degrees more of duration on each side of the cam and you can definitely hear it. The video covers changes made and stats of the outcome. I won't spoil it for you guys, just hit the link and enjoy. Congrats Alan, now go get that 130 MPH trap speed!

Thanks for the heads up Les... I knew there was going to be a video, I didn't know it would be this quick. He just dynoed it Friday morning. I'm heading up there tonight to get it, we'll be playing with it on the dyno tomorrow to see if we can squeeze anymore out of it, as well as test some air cleaners, filters, a different carb etc etc.. I'm just ready to get it back in the car and start cruising again...

Congratulations!

Not exactly sure how "effortless" it is though.....there's a lot of R&D and time that goes into a 700 HP pump gas (9.8 compression) 496 with a dual plane and a 4150 carb! Mark's little gears are always spinning to come up with another detail to tackle...and it pays off!

That BLUE Corvette is going to surprise a bunch of folks once again!

Yeah a LOT of work went into the heads, not just for peak power but midrange as well... It made 617hp at 4900 rpms.... Designed the whole package around 3.36 gears and a tight converter. Mark did a lot of trick stuff this time around, lots of little stuff, to make an overall better package, not just more power Hopefully all of the effort shows up on the time slip....

Jim, we are gonna try to get a track rental together in Feb....FYI...

I believe that changing to blue was so he could go all Ninja on more poor unsuspecting victims out there.

Yes, that is a well detailed engine. But us small block guys gotta put more effort (read that radicalized) for a 700 HP street engine!

I'm sad to hear about the loss of another green vette (at least it didn't get the red treatment ), but very impressed with near 1.4 hp/ci from 049 Heads. I'm wondering if your Builder ( Mark of Vortecpro?) does the Head work inhouse? That's a great build, those Heads are making more hp/ci than my AFR 265's with 460ci, the man really knows how to squeeze out extra ponies.

My Top Fuel bike was blue! Congrats on the upgrade. It looks like it is hitting your expectations. That's going to be a fun engine but I think your new 15" tires are going to feel like you are driving on wet pavement all the time.

That’s all she’s got folks. Spent a half day on the dyno testing all kinds of stuff, theories I had etc etc. 14 pulls later, this is the hero pull. Came up a little short on 700hp...story of my life..
This was with my 850 cfm carb. The 1000hp dyno carb was about 4-5hp over the 850, but we didn’t test the 1000 again after the 850 went on and we started cranking up the timing. It “would” have made 702-703hp with the 1000 but....All in all, I’m very happy with it. What Mark Jones does with these things is pretty amazing.

That's so close to 700 HP that the difference is insignificant. And look at that torque!

Very nice. I am curious since the engine was still climbing at 6300 why you did not pull it higher, do you have a set rpm limit? It would be nice to see how far the power caries out to determine a shift point. Also the torque peak was the at the lowest recorded number, it would have been interesting to start the pull lower to see where the torque starts to build, does it match well with your torque convertor?
