When we were kids we had Thyme. Great stuff. 1 hour is all it took. EPA got rid of it.
Now I use Berryman Chem-Dip.
It has to soak 48 hours, but same results.

Rumor has it that AutoZone has GUNK carb cleaner bucket / basket but I don't think its as strong as Chem-Dip. You can forget any eBay deals because U.S.P.S. has a problem with HazMat shpg. So, that leaves UPS shpg through Amazon with Chem Dip.
Read the back of the can. Supposedly Chem Dip will eat some materials if left in the bucket too long.

For gasoline varnish use acetone. It dissolves it instantly

Just tried the Gunk product. Appears to be the same stuff in the Gunk Spray Cleaner. Worthless for carb parts.

My apologies to the O.P. 1967droptop, but I would like to continue this thread on this subject with a little more indepth about carb cleaners.
Has anyone had issues with accidently removing the finish on certain carbs?
And if so, what was the product and your theory of why it happened?

Just found Thyme at NAPA on-line. Not sure if the local store carries it as they are now closed. Will check in the morning Did you have good experience with Thyme?

Would you suggest submerging all the carb parts in acetone? I could possibly get it in a gallon size and dip all the carb parts in the solution for a short period.

I have not had any issue with Chem-Dip removing factory zinc finishes....but it will remove paint of any kind.....
I have even left some plastic spacers and stuff on and the Chem-Dip did not attack it (I.E. Holley Accel Pump Cam)
Use bailing wire to hang the parts off the side of the bucket and pop the top back on.....I go 24 hours then wash with water and compressed air.....from there they go into a 9 litre Ultrasonic cleaner for 90 minutes at almost 200 degrees.....they solution is distilled water, A shot of Dawn detergent, and a couple shots of lemon juice..... really brightens things up and is awesome for vintage bike carbs......
I have had my Chem-Dip for about seven years now.....same can....the crud just falls to the bottom....still just as strong as the day I bought it!

It was dark, smelly,expensive, and had a waxy yellow coating that floated on the surface to reduce evaporation. I bet a 2.5 gallon pail was $125.
If it works in 60 minutes, it's great stuff.

I just looked at Tyme. Looks like CRC bought them. Not the first time they bought a name and changed the formula.
It say non-flammable. Hard to believe it's the same formula.

Chem-dip (actually, any of the good carb cleaners) will remove surface coating on carb castings if left in long enough. If you are lucky enough to still have any original finish on a 40-year old carb (hard to imagine, but I've seen one or two), soak it only as long as needed to dislodge dirt/gunk.

I have used pinesol with good success. Let soak overnight.
The formulation since the 90's is primarily alcohol but it works.
