I usually remove the fan before the pump- reduces the chance of poking a hole in the radiator.

You need to remove the fan to get the pump out. Otherwise the fan blade interferes with the shroud.

Actually I think the OP has a damned good idea...
I have always removed the fan first, because "that's the way it's done." But the nuts attaching the fan and pulley to the pump shaft are a pain to get to when you're reaching over the C3 fender. The 4 bolts attaching the pump to the block are easy to get to whether the pulley & fan are attached or not. The fan will easily come out of the shroud while attached to the water pump. So why not disconnect the hoses, unbolt the pump from the block, and pull the entire pump/pulley/fan assembly out as a unit, and then remove the fan & pulley on the workbench in comfort..? I think it's a brilliant idea, and I'm going to try it the next time I do a water pump on a C2/C3!

Now I really gotta try it. I don't have access to an 81/82, but I do have access to a couple of '79s. I'll post the results when I do it...

79 won't have the smog pump/diverter valve in your way. Bracket uses the same pump bolts.
Between the fan/shroud/fan clutch,brackets, etc.......you'll see. Beer?

Just for fun, jamb a spreader bar right in front of the pump sheave. (I know, not stock).

I don't think the OP said he had an 81/82. If he has a '68 - '79, I believe the pump will come out with the fan and pulley attached.
...and aren't I older than you, my son..?

You might be able to get away with calling me "brother." But it would have to be from a different mother...
