I have always removed the fan first, because "that's the way it's done." But the nuts attaching the fan and pulley to the pump shaft are a pain to get to when you're reaching over the C3 fender. The 4 bolts attaching the pump to the block are easy to get to whether the pulley & fan are attached or not. The fan will easily come out of the shroud while attached to the water pump. So why not disconnect the hoses, unbolt the pump from the block, and pull the entire pump/pulley/fan assembly out as a unit, and then remove the fan & pulley on the workbench in comfort..? I think it's a brilliant idea, and I'm going to try it the next time I do a water pump on a C2/C3!

Now I really gotta try it. I don't have access to an 81/82, but I do have access to a couple of '79s. I'll post the results when I do it...

You might be able to get away with calling me "brother." But it would have to be from a different mother...
