Default Stuck Light-1968

I have a 1968 with a driver's side light stuck in the up position.

The car is new to me and both lights worked slowly when I first got it, so I decided to put on new hoses, filter and check valve. Tried it for the first time and both lights popped up nicely, but the left would not go down (right snaps down nicely). I turned on and off the lights a few times, and one time the left went down. Tried it again, and it stuck in the up position.

Given it has one relay up front and the two actuators split off of it, I think the relay is fine.

Just a bad seal in the driver's side actuator?

probably. you can reach up from under neath and pull on the linkage to get it to come down. To trouble shoot you can lift the hood and see all the hoses. Mark them all, then swapp them on the actuators and see if he problem moves from left to right. It might be a leak in a hose as well.

All hoses are need and in their correct place. I put a vacuum gauge on the lower outlet to see if it would suck back down or hold vacuum. The light did not move and it was holding vacuum at 25 pounds. Can the locking mechanism get stuck? I was in a hurry and gave the arm a pull from under the car, but it did not come down. Maybe pull harder?

Be gentle. Don't force anything. They come down relatively easy. Just grab a different area of the linkage and tug on that (gently but firmly). You don't want to damage anything by forcing it.....then it will be a big deal. If you can't figure it out say something and I'll go out and take a picture of me doing it..... I did it for years before if fixed my actuators....... but it will be when it warms up

I will give it a tug tonight and see if it releases and drops down.

There is a close stop and open stop adjustment. it's to keep the linkage from over locking like bending your knee the wrong way.

I was able to pull the light closed and all is good for now. I noted several springs missing between the two lights, so I will order those as well as a rebuild kit for the actuators. More work, but I am in Chicago, so plenty of time to get some things sorted out.

Thank you!

Good 'How-to' video but he is missing a spring too.
# 10 - down stop
# 8 - missing switch
# 7 - missing spring

Put new springs on and checked all trouble spots with the vacuum gauge. Everything tested fine and we have working headlights!

Also have working wipers. Good day in the garage.
