Suggestion for an aftermarket carburator for 79 Corvette 350 code 4 engine
Hello everyone...
I need to replace my Quadrajet carb it won't start without starter fluid and once it starts it wont idle either... The car was parked for over 11 years and the gasoline was a dark brown color... I already cleaned the tank and the lines... I have one can of seafoam and 10 gallons of recreational fuel with no ethanol on the tank... It runs great if you keep it above 1200 RPM anything below it dies... I already tried to clean the carb with the SeaFoam treatment and carb cleaners as well...
The quadrajet also has a tiewrap on the choke side holding something that I do not know what it is either forcing it to open or close and bypassing that function...
What do you guys recommend that would require the least amount of modifications to install it... I also ordered taller valve covers and will need to block off the EGR valve to fit those... So should I get a carb and an adapter plate or spend a couple of hundred more and get an intake as well? The car is bone stock with 49k miles on it...
Thanks...

Thanks...
Some jurisdictions ride herd over tampering with emissions equip tampering … others pay no attention … a few no inspections at all.

Florida... No inspections at all...
Do you know if the 79 L82 code 4 is electric choke or hot air choke? on the quadrajet?
Thanks for the reply...

I am looking at this one....
https://smile.amazon.com/Team-Perfor...ords=quadrajet
Would that works as a complete bolt on without any mods to the vacuum lines / cables and fuel lines?

3 bills? I don't know what Lars charges but whatever it is it would be a better deal. Quit fighting the inevitable, you need a carb, Lars needs a job, don't band-aid what can be cured. Not running a Qjet now, but did for many years on many different engines, stick with what you know.

I know... my biggest concern is the timeframe to ship the carb / fix it / ship it back etc.... I may send Lars the original carb and keep it as a spare...

Please don't "PM" me... I don't keep up with "PMs", "IMs", "LinkdIns", "Texts", "Tweets", or "Facebooks" on all these different Forum sites. Just send me an e-mail request for technical info and I'll be glad to assist in any way.

In answer to your choke question, 1979 Corvettes came with a hot air choke. The electric chokes became standard in 1980.
The carb in Amazon looks like an Edelbrock 1903 carb, not an original Rochester Carb.
Since you still have the original Carburetor, having it rebuilt professionally would be much better than purchasing a one size fits all rebuilt carb. Your original carb was engineered for your engine.
If your car is all original you might consider staying with stock height valve covers. Blocking off the egr will result in very little, if any peformance improvement.

Actually blocked-off egr is waaaay better performance than stuck-open egr.

LARS to rebuild the OEM quadrajet since when they run correctly. The qjet is a really good carb when set up correctly OR the Holley 4175 650 CFM vacuum secondary spreadbore replacement carb that I have run on my 78 L-82 4 speed since 1985 and is a great/simple/reliable Holley 650 cfm Vacuum secondary spreadbore carb just like the Qjet with small primaries and big secondaries....
LARS to rebuild, Holley 4175 if looking for a new NON OEM carb

Thanks for the info on the Holley carb.... the ones I found on ebay have electric choke do you know what changes had to be done to install it in your car?

Look for the carb number and post it, or email the number to Lars. This is to make sure the carb is not off a truck and that it's a unit you can work with.

Thanks I will do that... But I think my problems are related to the long storage period and bad gas... The previous owner tried to start the car before selling it to me with the bad almost dark BROWN gas on the tank... I had to clean the tank and installed an electric pump to drain the fuel out and clean the lines, now the car is back to the mechanical pump (new one)....

I forgot to mention in my first post would be to check the carburetor number to make sure it is the correct one for your engine. If it is not the original one you can still have it rebuilt and the rebuilder could replace the metering rods and jets that work best with your engine.
If yours is not original, and you would like one there are cores available on eBay.
Here are the numbers:
L82 with no air conditioning: Auto trans 17059210, 4 speed 17059211, Auto trans with A/C 17059228.
My comment on the EGR not effecting performance assumed that it is operating. I have tested them with a hand held vacuum pump, to see if they hold vacuum and the valve moves with vacuum applied.

For a 79, a new intake will save some weight. Unless you go to a taller hood, you won't gain much, though. I have EGR block-off plates on my two cars, seems to work.
Also, unless you plan to go to taller roller rockers, there is no reason to get taller valve covers. The PO of my wife's 79 did this. I finally corrected it after removing the valve cover for a second time to install the alternator belt. Below are before (Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner, and thermocouple wires for an experiment) and after (Correct L-48 valve covers and L-82 air cleaner). The EGR block-off rusted immediately, but at least it isn't chrome (which would leak, instead).
