Default 69 Standard steering column rebuild pics

Got my column torn down with the help of Jim Shea’s terrific papers. Will do a reassembly thread with pics if there is interest. Pics are of all parts of my disassembled column. Waiting for my new lower bearing assembly. Only thing assembled is sector gear is already in housing. Interesting as I found my column was collapsed about an inch and a half, but as you can see in the picture, the plastic is still intact holding the two piece shift tube together. Build to follow.

Oh and here is a pic of the column steering shaft, again with injected plastic intact. So I guess my column didn’t collapse enough to affect the shift tube. Not sure how the steering shaft plastic is still there, but there is absolutely no looseness between halves of the steering shaft so I am just going to reassemble as is. My column measures just short of 40 inches uncollapsed. Shift tube measures 30 inches. Only tough part of taking it apart, was I had to pound the shift tube out of the bowl. Now cleaned up it is a nice slip fit.

A reassembly thread with pics would be fantastic.

I vote YES on a reassembly thread.

What did you use for black paint? I've got a black one I need to re-do.

Did you have the special tools? I have my column disassembled, but not to the degree yours is. There is some special tools I didn't have to go further.

The only special tools needed would be a steering wheel puller and the lock plate compressor. Both of these are now included when you borrow the free tool loaners from Auto Zone etc.

I think I was confused the the tilt column. I thought one needed the J-23072 and J-23073 tools to remove the tube inside the column. How did the turn signal housing come off and the tube with the trans lock cable?

Curious, don't you need a good sized vise for this? Seems it would be difficult to hold onto with out a vise.

Only disassembly problem was the top of the shift tube (the tube with the transmission interlock arm on the bottom) was stuck in the shift bowl. Used a socket the size of the shift tube and pounded it out. Just don’t let the bottom hit ground as you pound it out or you will break the injected plastic and your shift tube will now be in two pieces. No I didn’t need a vise for anything. Just 3 hands sometimes.

Turn signal housing is attached with four bolts down into the column jacket. You must disconnect the ignition switch shaft to pull it out.
