Default NEW INFO ON "Engine dies when I turn right..."

I raised the car (wheels off the ground), started the engine, got it to operating temps and turned the wheel, lock to lock..in BOTH directions...no problems, bogs or anything...she kept purring and running smoothly. I then lowered the car and took it for a spin and the SAME THING HAPPENED..when I turn RIGHT...BOG and ALMOST DIES...I play with the throttle with my foot and it comes back to life. ONLY WHEN I TURN RIGHT...when I turn left, if acts completely normal!!! HELP!!!!

Only thing I can think of is a vacuum line or spark plug wire being pinched.

If you have the car parked, engine off with the wheels on full right lock will it start? Could be a number of things but I'm thinking it may be related to the ignition switch on the steering column, not the the key part but the actual switch or maybe a bonding issue with an earth strap?

There is no air off to the right, so car gets too rich... ok, power steering load? Try taking PS belt off, preferrably in a parking lot, and see if it still does it or if it is way harder to turn right than left.

Yes it will start with no problems.

Okay, so does it matter how fast you are going when you make the right turn?

Can you get your car up on ramps or a 4 post lift safely and repeat the test while having a look? If not the power steering system (remove the belt and try again), something must be getting pinched.

I would assume the power steering has a belt of it own , I would take that off and see if the engine still stops on full lock.

I have seen a short in the steering column cause problems , but that vehicle would just stop randomly.

PS I would not drive it with the power steering belt removed.
and as always chock the vehicle to prevent unwanted movement.

Odd problem. A few questions....if you turn right but do not go to full on right lock does it still bog down? Is this a stock type power steering system or something special? Watch the engine when you turn the wheel fully right...does it move around excessively? Was the reason you replaced the PS system due to this issue?

Replaced the starter recently? Maybe loose wires on the solenoid? maybe start the car, turn to the right and grab the wiring harnesses and wiggle them and see if the engine stumbles or cuts out.

You can drive the car with the power steering belt removed. When I got my car, the PO had removed the belt and drove it that way for years, for reasons that I can no longer remember. Point is, you can drive the car with the power steering disconnected long enough to determine if it has anything to do with your problem. Nice ride BTW.

Just to clarify.....does the car shut off like the ignition key has been turned, or is it like the engine stalls (bogs) because of a load put on the engine?
Since it worked when you had the wheels in the air I'm suspecting something wrong with the new steering parts installed.

Obviously, it's a California car. They're all 'lefties' out there.....

Definitely an odd situation. One difference between sitting on stands and actually cruising is that the fuel will slosh side-to-side during turns. Maybe there is some problem with the filter sock in the fuel tank where it actually blocks off fuel flow when it moves to the left I'm assuming that you still have the mechanical fuel pump. If you had an electrical pump, I might suspect a wiring problem causing power to drop from the pump when turning right.

Sounds like a carborator setting issue to me. Check to make sure your carborator float level is not set way to low and during a certain turn the engine starves given lack of fuel in the fuel bowl.

Just my hunch, Mike.

Could be technique. This may help.
