Opinions on Firestone Wide Oval Radials
Getting close to buy my tires. Looking at the two obvious brands and stock size for my 68. The BFG TA's are a good reasonably priced tire however I do like the appearance of the wide ovals. Can someone who has the wide ovals give me your opinion on ride quality. I've spent 8 years on my restoration and will drive this car on the street for pleasure. Looking forward to your input.

Bias ply can ride a little harder than radials..personally I dont think they are all that bad, not like they were in the 70s.

Go with the BFG's, Best bang for your buck. I have not been a fan of Firestone since their notoriously failed 721 radial that separated on almost every car that ran them in the '70's and '80's. Then Firestone had the whole exploding tire fiasco on the Ford Explorers. 88 people died, countless were injured. 6.5 million tires recalled. Pretty bad quality control there for years.
I wouldn't take Firestone tires if they were free....
there's just too much riding on them.

I have the new Firestone Wide Oval radials. They look great, ride smooth etc etc... If you're just a cruiser that's going to putt putt to car shows and leisurely sunday drives on smooth roads, they are fine. If you actually want to go around turns at all, or drive on a lot of freeways with knurled/grooved concrete, then stick with BFGs... These Wide Os handle like Pep Boys station wagon tires, super soft sidewall, and their tiny foot print and tread design grabs EVERY groove in the road. If you are cruising the knurled concrete super slabs, you will be steering this thing to keep it going straight. Hands down, the BFGs drive 10x better. The Wide Os do "show" better.
I have two full sets of wheels/tires, (wide Os and BFGs) and most of the time, I keep the BFGs on it as I actually like stability and good cornering. I mainly just used the Wide Os for car shows...

The new Wide Ovals aren't bias ply tires - they're radials with a very good ride.
