Default Flywheel wear

So, bit the bullet today and jacked the car up to pull transmission, bell housing and flywheel to get the starter ring gear replaced.

Actually went pretty smoothly, even getting the the T-56 Magnum out wasn't too bad. I will worry about getting it back in later.

Anyway, noticed some wear on the flywheel, clutch and wanted to get the CF Tech opinion.

496 BBC, T-56 Magnum (2.66 first), 3.73 12- bolt. 25# Hays flywheel and McLeod RST Street Twin Disc. Just over 12,000 miles on this setup. No racing, all street.

Best I can measure flywheel wear, it is on the order of 0.015" to 0.020". Here are some pics of the flywheel and clutch.

Thoughts. Put it back in or replace?

Your not racing, right?
Why not purchase a new non-race flywheel which includes a new ring gear ?... can be had in 16 - 30 lb for around or under $100 in brands Perfection and Pioneer.

I think it looks good for having 12,000 miles. Replace the ring gear, clean everything up and put it back together.

I am now considering a Ram Concept 10.5 dual disc setup. Top friction plate has a sprung hub vice the solids on the McLeod. Supposed to help with street manners.

Decisions, decisions.

Personally I'd put that flywheel on my Ammco brake lathe and turn it down to reface it... then use it again. I never put a used clutch disc in any car, customers or my own... I always figure if you are going to the trouble of having it apart, now is the time. You could probably take the flywheel and have it turned at a local shop for about 30 bucks too... Just a guess... I don't know what your local shops charge but we charge 33 bucks because it takes us about 20 minutes to do this job.

The flywheel doesn't look all that bad, the pressure plate doesn't look all that good so I'd resurface the flywheel (and if it needs a new ring they are pretty cheap) then I'd go for a new clutch kit that includes the pressure plate the clutch disc, pilot bearing (never use the roller bearings) and a new throw out bearing.

IMHO,

Willcox
