Removed the 75 fenders and firewall today - prepping for the 70
Well, I've had the fenders and firewall split for over a week, just waiting to
get the 75 out of the garage, so I'd have some room to put the fenders down
and work on them.
We did it. The weather was perfect - cool and clear.
I recruited the help of my 8 YO son, who actually lifted one side and wrestled
it off the firewall. It was actually pretty easy.
Now, the 75 (what's left) is sitting covered outside. I'll be working toward
putting the fenders and firewall onto my 70 soon. Then, the body comes back
off - for some chassis swapping and rebuild.
Here are some pictures from today. Check out the "70 pictures" in my
website to check all the pics.

Wow, very impressive.
But still much work to do.
I remember the look of my vette before the body off - and your pics show me how far I have come with my project in nearly 3 years of restoring
Sometimes it seems endless until things are done, don´t you think so?
But the time will come

Hi Mark.
Well, getting the kids to help isn't always easy when you have cable tv !!
Ty helped with the fenders, but Sam was being a pill. He finally made it out,
and all three of us carried the firewall out. It was heavier than the fenders.
I was lucky this weekend. The wife went over a friends house until 2:30 AM
on Saturday, so she slept all day as I cleaned the garage and worked on the
vette.
You didn't get anything done this weekend ?
Whadda ya mean ? You bought an engine this weekend. Isn't that enough ?
I'll be trying to wrap up the birdcage cleaning this week, but time is tight.
We will be hosting T-day at our house. Friday off - if I don't go in, to get caught
up at work. Maybe I'll do a little work then. Remember, I have a lot more to do
than you - in regards to the body.
As far as going to Hollis and visiting MarkM, I might have some time this
weekend after the holiday.
:seeya
Markus : I don't think my vette will ever measure up to what you've done.
I'm gonna get sloppy as I progress. Your chassis kicks butt ! Mine will never
look that good, since I want to drive her next summer.
BTW: Mine will definitely be black (with color changing flames) !!
Jay : Thanks. Yeah, the kids are being brought up right, with the attitude that
they can do ANYTHING, if they set their minds to it.

Dave
Does the front have to come completely off the car to replace the birdcage?
I think I have to replace mine.

Re: Removed the 75 fenders and firewall today - prepping for the 70 (stpman)
Steve, Not in all cases. It would depend on which part of the birdcage is in
question. The 'birdcage' consists of all the body reinforcement steel from
the windshield frame, down the door pillars, along the rocker channels,
up the rear door pillar, and an arch over the storage area - that connects
the T-top bar to the windshield frame.
Notorious spots are the windshield frames in the bottom corners and top
corners and the bottoms of the door pillars (more so in the front than rear).
Some shops can do most windshield frame repairs without disrupting much
fiberglass. Sometimes, the top corner of the fenders can be cut away - the
repairs done - and the corners 'glassed back on.
For several reasons, I've taken my front completely apart.
Beware - If the birdcage is rotted, then the steel reinforcements in the
front of the fenders will probably be bad. See my latest website pics to see this (1970) - in my signature.
For scary birdcage rot, check out the '75 pictures.

from what i can see across the top of the windshield and down the drivers side
is rotted (top frame is coming out in flakes) don't realy know how much farther though as i haven't got right into it. i plan on taking the body off this winter to do the frame, should i repair the rust before the body come off or after the body goes back on? worked on lots of different cars/trucks over the years but I'm new too vettes.
