Default Differential Vents or Casting Gaps?

Anybody with knowledge of differentials please help...

I just pulled my pumpkin off my '71, 350 4-spd and saw two small gaps or holes on the underside of the unit. These are on the rear edge of the recessed mounting area for the strut rod bracket:

Are these two small holes normal in the casting or indicitive of a developing problem?

Thanks for any insight...

Paul

Just casting flaws. If they haven't leaked in the last 49 years I think you're good to go.

agree with the above While you have it out drill and tap a drain plug. I used black epoxy paint.

I used the heavy duty rear end cover, Beautiful piece really strong with bigger bolts to hold the spring. I was polishing the inside in this picture.

It's just the back side of the bolt holes.

Might even be damage. I put my rear end together with Permitex Black instead of a gasket. What a mistake. I had to use a big chisel to get the cover off. I put some dings in the outer edges even being careful.

Thanks for the replies guys! I can now understand that they're just flaws in the casting that exposed the ends of the bolt holes. After it's all back together and in use I'll keep an eye on it to ensure it's not leaking. I don't think it was when it was a daily driver, but with all the old gunk that was on the unit when I pulled it, it was hard to pinpoint the source(s)...
