Edelbrock Performer 2101 intake with Q-jet choke
Hi all,
Putting my 1970 L46 back together. Had it rebuilt and when that was done, he put an edelbrock performer 2101 on and I had the original Q-jet rebuilt and putting that on. Previously I had a Holley and never had a Choke. I would like to install the Choke this time to make initial starting a little easier. I'm not sure how it goes on. If you see in the following picture, there is a plate that is bolted to the intake and it looks like there is a gasket under it as well, this is where I presume the Choke goes. But if I line up the mounting hole of the Choke with the hole in that plate, two problems arise. First, the bend in the Choke rod is not pointing in the right direction to go into the hole in the linkage. Second, if I mount it on that plate, the coil of the Choke is running into that plate... Doesn't seem like it should be that way. So, am I supposed to remove that plate completely? Or should I have a different plate?
Second question - there is a threaded hole in the intake manifold just behind the carb (covered in green tape). Am I correct that this should be used to run vacuum accessories? And then run a dedicated vacuum line from the front of the carb to the distributor?

First....remove the choke stove mount plate and see if the passage is blocked.......if it is, just convert it to electric choke....many kits available.
The port in the back of the manifold is good for full manifold vacuum......find which port on the front of the Q-Jet has full manifold vacuum at idle and run that to the distributor vacuum can.

You need a different stove....there were several different ones....
I myself block the hole and run electric choke conversion.....it is blocked with a 1204 Fel Pro gasket....heat is bad.

Look at the difference in the two covers, Edelbrock opening for the rod seems to be larger. Does yours work without the cover?

Melting Slicks
i used one of these Summit choke rods with my '72 q-jet and 2101 manifold
had to tweek it slightly to get to open properly.
my crossover passage is blocked off, so i used the mount bracket under the choke coil without the gasket underneath,
it just takes a bit longer to heat up and open.

Thank you - to clarify, you have edelbrock 2101 with Q-jet and you used the original choke but changed out the Choke rod? I've never used a choke before, does the coil spring part supposed to rest right on that steel mounting plate? I assume you will put the "dog house" back over it as well?

Yes. Edelbrock 2101 with original Q-jet and choke. There is a nub on bottom of choke that fits into the choke adapter plate. Use the Edelbrock #9171 choke rod.
I will be using the cover/dog house.

I wonder if I have the wrong choke. Maybe this isn't the original choke? Notice how if I set the Choke on that plate, the one mounting hole doesn't rest on the plate? It is sitting on the coil spring and if I put the screw in, I would be pushing the coil onto the mounting plate. That doesn't seem right? Is the coil supposed to sit in the little recess in the plate that I'm pointing to? If so, mine doesn't... And maybe that's another indication that I have the wrong choke?
