Default 72 clutch query

Hello all, Just got my 72 350 coupe from the states, finding my way around it. wondering if my clutch is normal or needs adjustment.
when I press the pedal in to engage a gear, I get a crunch, I have to press the pedal hard into the carpet to get the gear to engage without crunching, but fine if I press the pedal down hard, feels like it needs a bit more throw and wondering if this is common and if there is an adjustment I can make.TiA.

There is a threaded rod in the engine compartment with adjustment nuts. You want to be able to push the pedal down with your hand about 1 1/2" before feeling resistance.
