Default M20 Reverse Lever in Neutral Position?

Setting up the Transmission's Rod Levers in Neutral for acceptance of the Shift Rods once the Locating Gauge is slipped into position (which ain't going to easy).
Just to confirm, the Reverse's Lever is in Neutral Position when (just like levers 1-2 & 3-4) the lever-to-shaft indexers are at the 6 and 12 O'clock positions. Correct?
Hard for me to determine the Reverse Lever's Neutral detent by "feel" with the Steering Lock Cable attached to it (disconnected at the Steering Column's Lock Lever) and I ain't about to disconnect the cable from that Reverse Lever, Way up in there!

Thanks folks.

YOu should make the tool that lines everythign up. It slides in the gap at the ase of the assembly. Theres a slot that would put all the levers in line. Do a forum searc hon the tool/ Willcox used to have a diagram of the tool bu his site has been down for almost a month.

Thanks much for the response . I did think about making my own Position Gauge, but with my cutting skills, .

Those "indexers" I call em anyway,, are marked with arrows here. They're little nubs that fit in the Levers, at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock on all 3 Lever Shafts.
If all lever shafts are positioned as shown, are they all now in their Neutral positions?
Once I get this confirmed, then I can use the slot alignment tool and then attach the Shift Rods to the Levers. Going with the short throw Lever holes for hookup.

I ain't the best in describing things without pictures.

And I wish to High Heaven I would have done this alignment then, when I took this photo, than NOW: under the car with the Crossmember & Exhaust Pipes in the way. Thinking of cutting a small hole or slot in the Tunnel for a straight shot at the Shifter Slots with the alignment tool. Wonder if anyone here has done that.

Thanks again Vet!

You should be able to grab the input shaft and output shaft and spin those, if all of them are in neutral you could spin them independantly. LIke wise if the transmission were inn the car you could remove the driveshaft from the output shaft and again spin it. If it were in gear it would not move because of the engine

Has anyone tried this?

This diag shows the required line up of the Levers so that the Shifter Shaft's end can pass thru for Neutral (circled in RED).
Without a Positioning Gauge in place to line up these levers, how about doing a good visual line up with the slots in Lever 3&4 and the Lower Housing FIRST. Snug 3&4 Rod's lock nuts in place once the Rod's Swivel is set to it's Tranny Lever, then double check that the two slots still line up. Re-adjust Rod length if necessary.

Then place the Shifter Shaft's end within 3&4 Gear Lever. That is the Shifter Shaft's Neutral position for the car.
Attach a not-too-strong bungee cord between Shifter Shaft and Door Open Handle, as shown. Make sure it's pull is square with the Neutral line of travel. Tip of the Door Pull Lever works for me.

Then take another trip underneath the car and slowly nudge fore or aft the Rod on 1&2 Gear Level until the Shifter Shaft "CLICKS" into position, thus lining up with 3&4's slot. Screw the Rod's Clevis in or out until the Clevis's hole lines up (use Clevis Pin) with the 1&2 Tranny Lever's hole you wish to connect to. Install Clevis to Tranny Lever and double check that 1&2 Gear Lever in the Shifter Housing hasn't moved by going back up topside, and checking the Shifter Shaft moves freely thru Neutral. Install Spring Washer and Cotter Pin when aligned.
Next, do the same with the Reverse Lever's Rod, moving it until it too lines up by clicking the Shifter Shaft into the Reverse Lever's slot. Snug up Lock Nuts, recheck Shifter Shaft freedom thru Neutral, then tighten.
Finally, confirm all line up by removing the bungee cord and moving the Shifter Shaft side to side without any hang ups.
I read somewhere in a similar thread that someone did this alignment without the alignment gauge. I'll guess that they maybe did it this way. Everything in based on the proper lineup of the Housing's slot and the first Gear Lever's slot.
Will it work? We'll find out.

Wish me luck.

.
Yeah, the engine is in and the car is on jack stands high enough to clear all tires from the ground (I've got a big gut!). And thanks to your post, I just realized I can spin a rear wheel to check for Neutral.
