Bonneville Salt Flats? 200 mph
These cars were out there in Aug 2002. If anybody knows how to contact anyone of them, please hook me up:) I need to find out some info on what they have done before I go out for 200+ mph. Thanks in advance.

George,
I know I saw an article in a magazine some years ago about Sundowner. Gorgeous car and FAST! Not a clue where it is or was.

Hmm...I'm partial to Sundowner. It's the reason for my thread on lift, drag and all that...
I notice that they all have what appear to be strakes on the T-tops. I wonder...
Also, I notice that the flip "shark tail" was cut off the car (or at least lessened)...

1979 - "At the Bonneville Speed Week on the Utah Salt Flats, Duane McKinney's 1968 Corvette takes B/GT Class with a record 210.762 mph, with a 468ci big-block engine. With its single four-barrel normally aspirated carburetor, this speed record makes it the fastest carbureted car in the world."

I've heard so much about the earlier C3's having a light frontend because of the design at high speeds. The later cars with the larger frontends are suppose to be much better, yet these cars have the early front end hmmmmm  . Aside from the hoods, the bodies look pretty clse to stock :) .

Re: Bonneville Salt Flats? 200 mph (SmokedTires)
Flareside,
The C3 is not overly light in the front at high speed if the car is lowered with a slight rake to it. It's more the air under the car that causes the problems, The new Vettes are more aero dynamic and the large fender humps on the C3 do induce lift; but, not as bad as many have claimed it to be.
Check the archives on a couple of LeMans articles I have posted detailing stock bodied (no wings) C3's over 200mph. The Heinz 57 car (1968 vintage) did 212mph on the Mulsanne straight with a carbureted L88 running somewhat lower compression because of the low octane gas allowed at the race. The Sundowner car looks even smoother and faster than the Heinz car. Bonneville's high altitude hurts horsepower in a big way; but, they still make some exciting runs.

Chuck - I need to get out there and do some more crazy things before I grow up!
Rainman69 - The T-Top 1 inch wide steel straps and in my case also rear widow straps are for rules.
Flareside - I would like a small gearing change because right now with 4.11 and OD I'd be spinning 7500 at 214 mph. I'd rather do a few less rpm because I'm past my max hp. I figure that 3.90 is about ideal.
The reason speeds seem low at Bonneville is heat, altitude, and traction. I was spinning my tires at over 130 mph and I had a hard time getting up to 7000 rpm for the flying mile start marker. Some of the cars were putting 300+ pounds in the trunk

Now that's a HiRise hood! Seriously, I'm interested in this too, I wanna learn how I can get the lift to bare minimum at high speeds.

Groovyjay - That car had some monster 8 stack injection system and was right under 300 ci doing some serious rpm. I saw this car at another event.

Here's another idea to cheat the wind I'm just going to drive there and I don't have any illusions of a class record.

Damn, I wish I lived closer. I'd like to be there for the run(s). When the time comes, take many many pictures.
Hell, I might show up anyway. Shouldn't take me more than 1 1/2 weeks to drive out there. :cry
