It's So Cold...-28C (-20F)...
That the bathroom vent fan froze solid. The cat sleeps beside the furnace. And the windchill will be -40 tonight (that is where celsius and fahrenheit are equal on the scale). The flames in the fireplace don't flicker. The block heater in the Impala won't bubble. The salt on the roads doesn't work. And at work today, for all you who have been using keyless entry for some, your batteries are dead and your door locks are corroded/frozen solid from lack of use with a key . You want your car serviced??
All kidding aside, it is bitterly cold. For those of you in this northern high-pressure zone, take care. Keep emergency supplies in your car such as warm clothing, flares, high-sugar snacks and the like. A cell 'phone also. Use iso-propyl (rubbing) alcohol in your gas tank (also called gas-line antifreeze). And keep the gas tank full to prevent the formation of water condensation. Breaking down in these temps can be life-threatening. Take care and be well! Spring is coming.

Ummm....it was almost 30C (80F) down here today. Wear light clothing and spend prudent amounts of time lying in the sun. Take tops off Vette and go for drive!
Sorry, Paul -- I couldn't resist. But don't worry, it's not going to last. Tomorrow's high is only about 16C...

I guess we'll have to raz ya back when your part of the world is 115 (F) at 9:30 PM this August and it's only about 85 for a high here (north IA).
Actually it's pretty warm here today, got clear up to 9.

Yeah - I hear you Paul.
We dipped down to the -10s a couple days ago (when Pat was whining about +7).
It warmed up a few degrees but here we go again. They are predicting
-20F for us tonight. I never pay attention to wind chill, since I'm rarely out in
this weather naked. Notice I said 'rarely' Need a hot tub for that.
Glad I got the remote car starter installed last month.
Bundle up and stay warm. I just got delivery of a new cord of firewood.
It seems the 155k btu/hr Vermont Castings wood stove can't even keep
up with this cold, since the oil burner keeps kicking on. Brrrrrrr :cry
We have chickens, and lately I can't get out early enough to collect the eggs
before they freeze. At least I know they are fresh - frozen at the source.
Lastly, my kids just came back from Killington for the weekend. I said to Ty
this morning "wipe your face - something's on it." He calmly replied "Dad,
that's just frostbite."

Re: It's So Cold...-28C (NHvette)
It's a brisk chilly 65 degrees, cool compared to the mid 70's we have been getting lately.
The only thing that is cold is the floor when I lay under the Vette. That concrete must be down to 50 degrees in some places !! :D
Come summer, I will bitch and you guys can smile. It was into the 110's most of the summer and even up over 115 for a while.
At that temperature the anything metal on your car leaves a permanent burn mark. Especially the door handles and the ignition cylinder.

Cold here in Pennsylvania but not that cold! I got another 15 years to work and Im already looking at real estate on the west side of Florida. A house with a Three (3) car Garage along the water. Boat on one side, Vette on the other! :steering:

hang in there fellow 79er... Don't freeze to death on us Paul.
Here in Northern Jersey it's low single disits overnight and low/mid 20's during the day. Basically the entire East Coast is under severe cold conditions. Even a chance of snow/sleet for my Mom who lives in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Tom,
I just went outside to plug in my Impala for the night. Wow...I haven't seen this cold for some time. Snow/sleet in South Carolina? I hope they have salt trucks and snow plows down there....I truly fear freezing rain and snow despite the fact that I am used to it. The only thing worse is black ice which we saw today.

Re: It's So Cold...-28C (Pedro'74)
Thanks Pedro. It's not a trivial matter if you have seen cars frozen up by the lack of of a few ounces of alcohol in the fuel system. I know you folks in the USA have a different name for "gas-line anti-freeze" but it is basically iso-propyl alcohol. You can get a large bottle at a local Dollar store for $0.99. And just another comment. Three cars today with frozen windhield washer systems. There is a difference between summer and winter windshield washer fluids!
BTW, did you find a career post-Ph.D?

Pretty cold here in PA too.....but not THAT cold!
The salt on the roads here won't melt and the front of my new 4runner was getting hit with all sorts of salt chunks last night. This morning I start it, crank up the defroster, and go in the house. I come back out to a huge crack in the windshield  There goes the restoration money put aside for powdercoating the frame. I guess it will be Spring till that gets done.

Re: It's So Cold...-28C (paul79)
Thanks for the tips, Paul. As you know, I come from a warm place, so these tips are very welcome. I'll get me a "survival kit" asap, for I drive on some not-so-busy roads, sometimes late at night, and a breakdown could be fatal...
I got an academic job, which is what I wanted. I'm teaching at Union College, in upstate NY. Loving it! :)

They'll just wait for it to melt
I live about 40 miles NW of Philadelphia. They're calling for single digit lows for the rest of the week.
I can't wait until spring
