Danny here,my question, being and older guy with a bad back have to replace speedometer cable on manual 1969 corvette.was bent up on the tremec side. Can I pull out the inside plastic inner cable and feed the new lubricated cable through the old casing and avoid all the agony of replacing the outer casing..I know it's a shortcut but will it work..if not I'll be in bed for days after doing it the correct way. Thanks everyone..my 13th vette.
Love that 69 so much .

Yes, you can replace the inner cable without replacing the sheath as long as the sheath is not damaged internally (BTW, should be a spiral wound metal cable, not plastic) –– However, you can't do it from the transmission end, it will only come out from the speedometer end because of the cable to gauge fitting. Go very easy on the lube or else you risk contaminating the speedometer head when the rotating cable screw-jacks the lube up to the speedo.
Thank you so much ,you are right the cable is not plastic, you are also right, can only go from the speedometer head, just pull out the new cable from the speedometer head side and feed new one through. Shall I go under the car and unscrew the transmission side to make sure it goes in correctly or just push it through and reattach at speedometer head...my back owes u a lunch if u ever are in Naples Florida..

I would disconnect the trans end of the cable - just to make sure the cable aligns with the gear. Thanks for the lunch offer, but you'd best save your $ for your chiropractor – owning a C3 is not a back-friendly relationship!
What am I missing here? Doing anything to the speedometer end of the cable is not going to be easy on your back…
Hell, just getting an arm up there to touch the speedometer end would put my back out of whack.
The other day I just wanted to spray some graphite lube on the clutch pivot points. I nearly had to call someone to extricate me from under the dash!
Thats so funny, but since u said it,I had to call out to my wife to pull me out from under the dash.. In all fairness this is my 13th corvette and even many moons ago when I was 20 working under the dash was very hard on the back...Labor of love though really enjoy doing what work I can on the 69 vette... that should be an inspiration for u younger folks first getting into older vettes...always timeless.still go in the garage just to put a smile on my face..
