77 - does it have cruise control ?
My wifes Blazer got stuck whilke driving to Maine last year. As she
approached the toll booths - the 350 was just pulling to GO. Luckily, she
managed to overcome the throttle with the brakes, and shut 'er down.
It turns out that the mechanical linkage to the cruise control actuator
had bound up where it attaches to the actuator (a rod w/loop at end).
Anyone with CC should check out this potential for disaster.
Oh yeah - no more CC on the Blazer since I took that rod off.

I had that same problem with the cruise rod on my 86 chevy pickp a couple of time. The looped end of the rod where it attaches to the cruise control vacuum diaphram would drop down when the cruise let off a little and get bound up in the hole it goes through, pulling on the throttle linkage, causing it to want to go when it should stop. I electrical taped all the way around that loop when it was in the right position, so that it couldn't fall down. Fixed that problem.
About the "ONLY" Vette shop I know of is Vette Tech (used to be on Mississippi St. in Metarie) and he moved to Picayune, MS(right across the state line). My buddy w/ the black C4 is over there today. I've seen Mario buy totaled cars and fix them and you couldn't tell. I can get the phone number for you if you want?
 This may sound like overkill but......after blowing an oil filter off at high speed on the drag strip and going for the ride of his life my husband has a kill switch wired up to avoid future "excitement" .
I know for a fact I've got 2 return springs on the Corvette. I hate the heavy feel to the accelerator but I guess in view of your experience it's worth it.
Maybe a kill switch wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Your story is plenty scarey for sure.
Sorry to hear about your car and I hope all works out well with the insurance.
