Also interesting to me is that the rocker doesn't appear to have any flexing in it - solid as a rock.

Not too many years back, I recall an auction of shop gear that included what was purportedly a "homemade spintron" made by legendary mechanic Smokey Yunick; supposedly built well in advance of any real spintron.
