What should be the torque values for the nuts on the U bolts for the drive shaft yoke at the 4 speed trans? Can't find that in the AIM and I'm unsure about the description in the GM service manual. I see the AIM specifies 12 -16 on the diff end. Not that you can get a torque wrench at either end.
I've seen a number of posts here asking about torque values. Does anyone have or know of a concise list of which values should be set only after the car is on the ground? I see those pointed out in the AIM, but placement of those notes is inconsistent. This requirement is sometimes with the part name, sometimes within the drawing.
Thanks
Mike
Rebelyell - that’s what I was referring to when I said “GM service manual.” Mine looks like the one in the photo below (very worn). Unfortunately some of the terms / part names in the manual aren’t the same as those used in the AIM. This includes terminology used in the back of the manual related to torque values. Maybe other manuals are better.
I saw those specs at the bottom of the page in my copy. Assumed that “Axle Drive Shaft” referred to the half shafts because of the reference to the spindle. Thought “To Yoke” referred to the diff side yoke.
Hello Mike,
The torque values for the 'assembly' of the car on the St.Louis line definitely appear on the appropriate page in the Assembly Instruction Manual.
However, some parts come to the line already put together as 'assemblies'. These torque values may or may not appear in the AIM.
The drawings have very small triangles with a single digit in them that correspond to the torque values listed in the lower left corner of each page.
It's a very good and quite complete system that has led to there being relatively few fasteners with unknown torque values.
Regards....
Rather than spending hours searching for a reference in the AIM, I typically use SAE J429 specifications. Most, but certainly not all, nuts and bolts on these cars are Grade 5.
