Default Dipstick tube solution

Greetz All You “Petrolheads” ! I was called that yesterday

I installed some aftermarket exhaust manifold. I originally went with an OEM style oil dipstick + tube, but it would not clear the manifold without a level of tube bending that I was uncomfortable with.

I then went with a Lokar piece, but it is fiddly to use. It terminates right under the brake booster.

Is there another solution I am missing?

I'm not clear on a couple things. As in..what engine and what exhaust manifolds.

Gen 1 350 small block. 2 1/2 inch aftermarket exhaust manifold. Stock style (but not factory) chrome dip stick tube and dip stick. Minor bending. Just below and slightly in front of brake booster.

Ah - yes. An SBC 400.

I will snag a pic once I get home. I think my manifold sticks out more. Will check.

Not meaning to hijack but I have a dipstick tube related issue.

I bought a new tube and stick assy for my SBC 400. I can push the tube about 1/4/ to 1/2 way down its mounting hole. I assume it is just an interference fit. It's tight, the access limited too. What it the tool and or trick to push it down all the way into it's seat without bending the tube? Thx.

I have had that problem as well. Never really found a solution to that one.

It is possible there is an OE "Lowertube" installed in you block. And if so, it may not be seated, thus may be preventing the NEW upper tube from seating.

Have you had the pan off this 400 ? Does it have a Lower dipstick tube installed ?

In my case there is a lower tube and it is fully seated. The problem I had was leverage. The tubes always seemed ever so slightly too big and I could not tap them seated.

I had to remove the old dipstick tube to get my new headers in. In the past I just put an open ended wrench on the flare in the tube and tapped it in but in this 'vette it's way too tight for that. The old tube, expertly mangled with precision, did a pretty good job. Open it up enough to slide over the flare and stick a bolt at the other end to tap on. Mine's only in there about halfway but its tight and doesn't leak. I just used a file to mark the new FULL location.

If for some reason you need a longer dipstick a Spectre 57283 is just under 21". They're at about any chain store for $18

You put the tube in the freezer overnight. This shrinks it a couple thou. Warm up the block if you can. Remove tube from freezer and install smart quick.

Contact Masta Performance - located adjacent to the GM proving grounds near me. Dan Masta - he is a personal friend. Check him out - all he does is dipstick tube assemblies.

The Lower Tube it properly seated into block by using a correct-sized drift pin tool in concert with a correct-size ball bearing

Spectre China junk is just that; run. Get the correct part(s) from GM or yard and install properly.
