Exhaust Manifold Bolt Washers? Are They Special?
Here is an example from ZIP. What is special about them? Or will flat hardware store washers do the job?

Hey, Paul,
those like like they've got a nitrided type of coating or some such, probably to reduce oxidation on the hot manifolds. I would probably just get some grade-5- or -8-compatible washers from Lowe's or Home Depot, or perhaps some stainless ones if I could find the right bolt size (3/8" aren't they?) and the right outer diameter.
Good luck! :seeya

I found a dozen SS washers in my basement stock so that looks OK. But there is something wrong with the four long and eight short bolts I received today from GM. Either the long is too long or the short is too short. I got the numbers from the NCRS folks and they are generally very accurate. The numbers are 03736035 (short) and 03733134 (long). Any comments on this?

The original washers were considerably thicker then grade 8 washers, and they are not as big around. There are also some French (oops, I mean Freedom) locks in places. I believe the Zip kit has the thicker correctly sized washers. :flag

It does look that way from the pic. But I can't see that it makes a great deal of difference. And I believe the French Locks were not used in the later C3s.

I still need a reading on those long bolts. They look too long. Anyone have the length for them?

Paul, check your AIM manual for the "freedom" locks, they were still called for on my 75 but you could be correct for the later years. Seems like I bought the manifold bolt and stud kit from Zip, there were 2 different kit depending on air conditioning or none.

I do not have A/C. I appreciate your answer but I cannot get the bolts or the studs matter sorted out here or in the NCRS Tech Forum. So I will just wait until the car gets out of winter storage and go from there. And do it myself. I DO thank you for getting back to me :) .

I've just changed the exhaust manifolds on my '80. The old manifolds that came off were originals. They did not have french locks but, as I am not worried about keeping it completely stock, I was advised to use them in the rebuild. The long bolts are 79mm long tip to tip. Thread is 29mm long. I didnt worry about particular washers, but made sure they were the same thickness.
Hope that helps.

I have ordered the correct washers as well as the french locks. Also, there is a stud rather than a bolt for one of the holes. I believe it is for the EFE actuator bracket mount on the passenger side. It is 3/8 sliding back to 5/16". Here it is. I would appreciate comments on this.
