What cam do I have?
How can I tell what cam is in my car ? The engine has been rebuilt at some point in the last 30+ years. I want to replace the cam in this 72, with the 350 base engine. I want a more aggressive cam. More mid range and of couse have to have the classic "lumpy" idle. Thanks :chevy

Well, probably not what you want to do, but you could pull the waterpump, timing chain cover and degree the cam and you'll get an accurate answer.
If your looking for a good replacement cam, they make original "blueprinted" muscle car cams, the 350/350 would be a pretty good choice.

How important is it to know what your cam is now? It's alot of work to measure the lift and duration with the cam installed or remove timing cover. Most cams will last ~130k miles if cared for. But if have the need call Crane or Comp Cams and tell them what you got and what you want - besides cold beer. :yesnod:
As for lumpy idle more overlap makes it and a tight lobe separation will do it even with short duration. Iv'e read 108 is the best lobe separation for sb chevy and if I didn't live in California I'd be using an Isky. :thumbs:
