vac advance
While checking the timing on initial start up on my engine here is what I found. With vac adv not connected total timing was 40 deg. with vac adv connected it was 58 to 60 deg. How do I correct this to 36 deg total. The main changes I made are a performer manifold, and a mild comp cam. I also pulled the emissions equip.

From what I have seen you are right on. 36 degrees is what you want, total timing WITHOUT vac advance connected. The vac advance will bring it into the 50-60 range off of idle but let go before wide open throttle. You can retard your timing a little to get the 36 instead of 40, but your motor may prefer the advance.

What is your base timing? ( 8 degrees, 10 degrees ???) Your timing spread sounds good, you just may need to retard your timing a few degrees.

You could get an adjustable aftermarket unit. thes can be tailored for when and how much the vacuum advance works.. Real nice... Cranes makes a complete kit with instructions.

You may want to get the aftermarket kit mentioned and try stiffer springs.. Look at getting the 36 degrees at about 2800 rpm with an intial of 10-14.
Check the tech tips. Lars has an excellent writeup explaining the whole process.
