Default Lock-up vs. non Lock-up converter transmission

How can you tell the difference?
What is the difference?
Which is better and why?
I have a problem when I come to a stop. As I'm slowing, the car jerks like the brakes are grabbing and then letting go. Checked the brakes and they are fine. I can feel the "jerking" in the driveshaft. Confused. ANY and ALL help will be greatly appreciated. :flag

The only transmissions that came with a locking torque converters where the Turbo350C (in the 1980-1981 model years), the 700R4 (1982 and up) and the 200R4 (not stock for a Vette). The difference is the torque converters lockup and allow no slippage so you have a true connection from engine to drive shaft. A regular converter has some amount of slippage as it is a fluid coupling only, no mechanical coupling.

The 350C can be distinguished by an electrical plug on the drivers side of the transmission just above the pan.
The 700R4 and 200R4 have 4 speeds instead of 3.

In all cases if the transmission is set up correctly the torque converter should "freewheel" as soon as the brakes are applied.

What you may be feeling is the transmission downshifting, but that should only happen from 3rd to 2nd and then 2nd to 1st right before you come to a stop. Most people don't even feel this.

4L80E also came with a lockup converter, as well as the 4L60E which is just a later version of a 700R4.

sounds like your having tcc solenoid trouble, its not unlocking when you come to a stop, ive seen them get so bad itll stall at stops and wont unlock for a few times starting it.Call a tranny shop and tell them what its doing.

and since the engine and tranny are locked together, the torque converter is not creating much heat and therefore your tranny has cooler fluid...... and that is VERY important to the life of an auto tranny
