Valve springs, what type for a Comp Cam 270H Magnum cam?
I'm putting that cam in my 71 small block 250/270 engine. Several of you recommended that I also replace the springs. So, what springs do you recommend? Thanks!

Most people like to match components, so wouldn't calling the manufacture be a good start?
Gee, comp cams has a website, I look for the 270H grind for a SBC. Part #981-16 is the recommended valve spring.. There ya go.
On a side note, and the number escapes me at the moment. Seal Power offers a spring for the old LT1 (early 70's) engines, that run about $50 for a full set. Good for cams up to .510 lift and no machining is required.

these are the springs that I am using with my Comp Cams XE268H-14 and 1.6 RR's. THe part number is 330585. Here is the link, should be the first ones on the page. THey are 1.379" dia, dual spring 140# seat pressure and 300+# at .500" lift, max lift is .560"

Full roller rockers will net you a few more ponies. I bleve even the roller-tip rockers will give a few more too.

Keep us posted on the Magnum 270H. I plan on installing one in my L48 one of these days. I'm hoping that there will still be enough vacuum to run my accessories, and that the idle won't be too bad. From what I can tell by the numbers the 270H should be the perfect cam for our small blocks.

Re: Valve springs, what type for a Comp Cam 270H Magnum cam? (Rockn-Roll)
rockn-roll:
When installing the springs, the retainer is stuck on top of the spring. The spring is then compressed down passed the machined part of the valve towards the tip. The locks are inserted and the spring pressure on the valve spring is released thus holding the spring down. I went with 10 degree titanium retainers and matching 10 degree hardened locks.
It is highly recommended when going with a stout cam to get a good valve lock matched to your retainer. One of my uncle's friends built a pretty stout 327. He used a stock type lock with his retainers. The motor didn't run for very long before it dropped a valve. The valve lock sucked right through the retainer sending the valve down into the cylinder.
and 601-16 valve locks (whatever these are)

Thanks Shane...I was thinking the those clips were called retainers, but apparently a retainer is the washer looking things. In this case locks are a must, and don't cost much.
