I had this idea on how to make the steering quicker using the stock rack and everything. Now I don't know if it's already been thought of or done, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. So here goes:
On the spindle there are often two holes for the tie rod ends, one for the manual steering and another for the power steering. The power steering has a quicker ratio being the hole out furthest. What if someone made an extension to this piece of the spindle that put a new hole further out therefore making the ratio even faster. It'd be made out of aluminum or something and attack by two grade 8 bolts through the exisiting holes for the tie rods (2nd one would have to be drilled for the later ones, like mine, which only has one because power steering was standard, or have it boxed in so only one bolt would be needed, just to hold it from coming off, that sounds like a better idea). Is this idea completely wrong and not really possible (I'm not an expert in steering) or is it possibly feasible?
Now I bet it will be feasible, a company will read it, make it, and I won't get credit.
Good thinking. Unfortunately placing a hole further out will cause a slower ratio. I'm pretty sure i right on this. some of the other guys can give their opinion as well.
The closer in to the pivot piont ie. the ball joint the smaller the effective radius and thus the mechanism doesn't have to travel as far for a given input to the steering wheel. Placing a hole further out will increase the effective radius and cause a slower ratio.
Thats my therory. anyone care to verify or challenge?
It would have to be a very beefy extension if there's even room. And you'd have to measure all the dimensions/angles very carefully to make sure it worked out right. Its much easier to just buy a different steering box or rack and pinion.
I recently had my idler arm replaced when doing some front end work. Instructions said the closer in hole is for quicker steering. Makes sense if you think about it. It moves the shortest distance. Outer hole travels the farthest. But, for manual steering, makes the steering easier.
quicker steering?! Is it me or do these cars already have a fast ratio? When I get in our family sedan and take a turn I feel like I'm cranking that wheel forever. And that car is better than some others I've driven
I like a fast ratio, but not sure I would at highway speed on long trips Highway speed here in FL is 80+, even the old ladies think they're NASCAR drivers .  Would be nice for autocross..
