To paint rally wheels or not?
I am working on a 1970 Mulsanne Blue convertible project, it has black rally wheels. The black does look good with the blue car.
Do I paint the rallies the correct silver or leave them black? It also needs new tires, so if I paint the wheels now is a good time.
Speaking of tires, it now has dry rotted G60 x 15, what would be a good replacement size?
Thanks

I like silver. I went with 255/60/15's, but they rub at full steering lock. You might want to go with a slightly narrower tire.

I like Eckler's Rally Wheel Paint & 255/60/15 (solid) White Letter Tires.
Just my humble opinion. Take Care, Gene in Texas. :steering: :seeya

Was at a big Corvette Show in Pittsburgh Sunday before Memorial Day. A guy there with a Red chrome bumper ('72?) had chromed his Rally Wheels, and omitted (I think) the trim rings. It looked SOOOOOO good

Same size here and BF Goodrich radials with no interference. I also painted my new rims with Eckler's Rally flat silver. Looks good.

I would suggest that you paint the wheels the correct ralley silver. It makes the car so much nicer looking. I sandblasted mine and removed all the sharp edges, then gave the inside of the wheels a gloss black coating followed by the silver on the outside. The over spray that comes throught the holes is the correct factory look that GM did on the assembly line. Add the trim rings and center cap for that classic look. For tires you can go with 225/70R15 or the wider stance of 255/60R15...BF Goodrich is what I am currently using....

I would strip em down and paint them the correct silver with the inside of the rim done in the correct charcoal grey to accent the slots.

I saw one at a local car show too. He had them reversed and chromed. Awesome! :flag

My ralleys will be in the blast cab and repainted the correct silver before they're installed back on the car. I like the silver ralley look! :chevy

Correct silver, no doubt. I have had problems with 255/60's on the front as well.

I guess they have to be Silver (or the correct silver). Another couple items to add to the list (silver and black/charcoal paint for wheels).

Try it silver. If you don't like it you can paint them black again. (mine are black. The ralley wheel silver doesn't match my silver paint - looks kind of goofy)
Note: GM replacement wheels come in black enamel

My red 73 had the rallys painted black as well. Looks kinda cool with the chrome and red body. Not sure what I'm gonna do yet.

If you are going for the original factory look, then certainly the argent silver with black insides (back sides of the wheels) must have a little silver overspray, the NCRS judges look for that. I had mine powder coated silver in a 2 step process, first they baked on the silver, then metallic was applied and they were baked again, looks awesome. Color choices are a little limited with powder coating.

Ralph,
I scuffed mine up real good with scotch brite and then cleaned the surface with some prep stuff. Painted the backside of the rims with flat black and then shot the outside with rally wheel silver. Looks good to me. Next time we get together look at them and see what you think. It has been over two years ago that I did it. Also I did the painting with the old tires still installed on my wheels. I run BFGoodrich 255/60/15. I hardly ever steer to full lock so I couldn't tell you if they rub or not. So far I have not noticed them rubbing.
