Default Amp reading across battery

Update on my draining battery. I disconnect battery and let set overnight car fired right up so battery must be good. Now I took an amp reading in series across battery and it reads .26 amps. Is this to high? I assume it is but where do I go from here? Do I start pulling fuses to see where the draw is coming from? Any help would be great. 1976 vette

Okay I found the drain I think it is the fan relay switch that is under the hood. This metal covered box is always warm to the touch no matter when.
I unhooked the 4 wires that ran into it and amps drop way down.

How are you taking an amp reading "in series" and "across the battery"?

Here's how I always lookd for power drains -
Disconnect the neg. battery terminal.
Get your multimeter out, and put the "neg" side to the disconnected neg. battery cable, and the positive side to the neg terminal on the battery.
If you are reading 12 volts, you have a drain.
Then I remove all the fuses and see if there is still a drain. If it's gone, start putting fuses back in one at a time until you find the circuit causing the drain. If you are unlucky, there may be 2 circuits draining... anyway, that can help pinpoint just where to look.
If after unhooking all fuses, you still have a drain, it's in an unfused circuit - look for those with fusible links and such, like the alternator.

when i was 16 i did an amp test by placing a tire iron across the terminals
the battery exploded and i thought i was unharmed.
i was OK, buy my jeans got holes eaten in them a few days later. i wore them to school, i was dirt poor and was quite embarrased. But the kids liked them, and they all started wearing jeans with holes in them. (late 1960's).
