I want to replace the damper when I replace the cam this winter. It's an original 73 454. Should I use an internal or external balance damper? I thought all engines were balanced internally to some degree so I'm not sure of the difference between the two.
Re: Internal or external balanced damper? (blunsford)
I am leaning towards the external. What is the OEM, external or internal? Other than the obvious, what exactly IS the difference between the external and internal?
Re: Internal or external balanced damper? (blunsford)
You need an externally balanced dampener. 396-427=internal. 454-502=external. Using the wrong type will make the engine shake itself into pieces.
Internal balance: Each piece from dampener, crank and flywheel is balanced separately to zero balance.
External balance: The unit consisting of dampener, crank and flywheel is balanced, but each piece has a certain unbalance. Due to the long throw of the 454 crankshaft they placed counterweights on the dampener and flywheel instead of the crank.
