Some of you might have read that I built 4 sets of ramps and I was going to attempt to simultaneously drive all four wheels up at the same time and ultimately have the vette up in the air about 14" off the ground. It was a two piece design that you will see in pics below, but here is a picture of the first set that each wheel was to pull up on off of the concept Len built.
I put those theories into action this afternoon and it didn't quite work. If I had an automatic or had I bolted the rear ramps to the concrete it might have worked, but while attempting to lightly dump the clutch and try to move up on the first step(all 4 wheels) I gave it too much power and it SHOT the rear set of ramps 40 foot down the driveway. The vette literally ran up 3 sets of 2x12's(high) and launched them like missiles out of the garage. Amazingly enough it was so fast that I don't even remember the vette popping up and dropping back to the ground after those ramps went flying. After that happened I drove the vette up on the 4 high front set-up and then jacked the rear up to install the rear ramps. I still haven't added the final section on the back yet and will do it tomorrow. Pretty darn scary because if someone had been standing directly behind the wheels of the vette it would have probably broke their legs. Anyway.... here's the vette before and after I removed the lower set of ramps on the front.
Tomorrow the exhaust comes off first and then replace the rear monospring & shocks. And then back on with the chambered exhaust.
:lolg: Been there, done that. And I was even very aware of that happening and I still did the same. I think I only launched mine about 20 feet so so far you hold the record Barry. And I think I'll let you keep that record.

Re: Ramp theories go array! (tshort)
Tie the front and rear together with a 2x4 or some other way.
The ramps I built worked just fine and the car is way up in the air now.
If you want plans, search C3, for archived posts, for posts created by BSeery - they should be out there.
everytime I see those things they scare me, not that wood can't carry tremendous loads but I'd rather have a steel set (in fact I have 4 steel ramps but they're too steap for the vette)
I feel alot safer with this vette being on bolted together flat 2x12's. I went ahead and got the vette level tonight as you can see below. Plenty of room to do anything as I got underneath a few minutes ago.

If you have the jackstands properly secured under the frame the car won't go anywhere. I was under the car (all 4 in the air) with it running at 2000 plus RPM and it wasn't going anywhere. Just seems to be alot of work to me.

David,
Part of the reason for doing this is to also clean up the frame after 32 years. There's only slight rust after all of this time, but while I'm underneath I want to take care of that. I only want to be under this vette once and that's why it is up in the air tonight where I can do everything I want to do. If I have jack stands on the frame it hinders that.
I am a bit pissed about one thing I found today. To date I have found that everything on this vette was correctly date coded, but when I got the numbers off of the Muncie tranny I found that the seller lied about it being a M-22. The code(P1D06A) shows it to be a M-20 of which I do not believe was a vette option in '71. The date code shows it to be a '71 Muncie, but I believe only M-21's & M-22's were in vettes. I could be wrong. Anyone want to confirm this? Ser# is C116114493 by the way. I'm going to post this as another thread just to get a response from the number's crunchers.
I agree with the locking them together... that way you know they are pretty well lined up as well.. quick side shot thought

This is what you should have done. Although this is harder to store in one piece, use lag bolts or heavy screws to attach the bottom plank to the rest. Makes it easy to take apart for storage!!

I have to say an old Sears floor jack with a selection of 2x4s and some jack stands and I can have my car up in the air a whole lot easier than anyone playing with a ramp....unless i'ts a pro job.....true I can't get it up to the ceiling, but I can easily slide an auto tranny under and out.....lay on the carpet scraps quite comfortable, and grab a nap instead of working....

as us old guys tend to do....

  I was lucky enough to grab three 3' X 6' exercise mats when the fitness center at work was throwing them out. Makes this nap under the car oh so comfy!!! :D :D
