Default zz4/fastburn 385/ht383. more crate motor questions

hi guys. have read several archived posts on zz4s, everyone that has em loves em. not too many on the fastburns, and almost none on the ht383. please bear with me, im a body man by trade, not a mechanic.

ok , here goes. the zz4 gets its max torque lower in the rpm band than the fastburn. probably because the runners are smaller for better low end torque??? kinda like the difference between the l98 and lt1?? will the zz4 have better 1/4 mile times because of the higher torque?? or will the added horsepower of the fastburn pull it out on the top end?? which one would be quicker stop lite to stop lite, all other things equal???

i have read many posts that say torque is what gets you there. if thats the case, wouldnt the 383 be the quickest even though it only produces 325 hp?? in chp magazine they did a heck of a writeup on the potential of this monster, but im not interested it what it can do. more like what it will do stock, with longtubes and a good tune. course we all know how that goes.

money wise, these are all within a few bucks of each other. the zz motors probably would be a little cheaper overall as they come with the intake, etc. the 383 would need an intake, distributer, water pump etc. using high end parts, that could probably add another 500 bux to the cost

this hp vs torque thing has me a bit confused i guess. not really sure which does what as far as 1/4 mile and acceleration goes.

im not really looking for a full out race engine. want someting that is pretty streetable, with lots of stop lite to stop lite grunt with occasional trips to the strip. however, i would like an engine that will get me solidly in the 12s if i do my part. will these engines do it for me, or am i dreaming??

the engine will be going in an 85 C4 with a 4+3. maybe the wrong forum for these questions, but most of the guys over in the c4 forum are sold on fuel injection, im not. i just figured you guys would know more about this kind of application.

im sure ill think of something else later, but i guess that about does it for now. thanks for taking the time to read this and any input will be greatly appreciated. best regards, and thanks again. j.d.

i didnt read most of your post, but why dont you just get the ZZ383 that is coming out in march. it has 425hp and 460tq i think. it is only 4600 bucks

...this hp vs torque thing has me a bit confused i guess. not really sure which does what as far as 1/4 mile and acceleration goes....

.....you need the torque to get you across the 60ft line and HP for the end run......I don't think these crate motors will get you into the 12's......for that you'll need a high revving setup that uses a single plane intake and big 200+ intake runners on the heads.....

........there's a fine line between racing in the 12's and true streetability......you might want to check with your local dragstrip about which classes you can run in with a 350HP crate motor, like dial in........that way you've got a good low end torque cruiser for the street and some occasional competition at the strip.......

thanks for the replies fellas. i was thinking it may not get me in the 12s. steetability is more important to me than the strip. the car shares daily driver status with my c3, and its my road car. gotta love the od trans on the highway.

thanks for the explanation on torque. clears things up. thanks again for the replies, now i guess it to the drawing board and get my plan together. regards, j.d.

I disagree about needing high revs to get in the 12's. My car has a 383 with a small XE262 cam. I leave at 1600rpm and shift at 5600 -5800rpm. It runs 7.99 in the 1/8 mile at over 86 mph. That's about a 12.4 quarter. It's about as streetable as my wife's mini van.

true true. my vette with much less hp then the zz383 is in the mid 12s. Ya, i have gears and shocks and so on. but i am planning to get the zz383 and run 12s with a more streetable suspension and gear. the zz383 has only a hundred+ more torque then i have now. i should run much faster or at least as quick as i do know even after going back to the more streetable setup.

I have a mid 11 second PUMP GAS SMALL BLOCK - ALL THROTTLE AND NO BOTTLE car and my car is 100% streetable!!! I would drive the car across the US if I'd have the time and money...and I paid significantly less for my engine that the ZZ383 costs...

I usually drive over 200 miles to the drag strip, run 11's, and then drive over 200 miles back home...

If you are mostly interested in stoplight drags, go with the 383, you'll rarely operate in the higher rpms that the zz4 and fastburn are built for. Especially with the rear end gears that most vettes came with. Joe

cool thread...
One saying I like is...'Hp is how fast you hit the wall...torque is how far you carry it...'

Kinda interested in your torque vs horsepower assesment for the ZZ4...I just went through this process myself and if I remember correctly, the FastBurn didn't lower the torque curve at all by itself, but the HOT cam did...so I went with the ZZ4 385hp...being FastBurn with nl cam...that'll give it both better idle and better low end grunt (if you wanted to get crazy I suppose you could add the FastBurn, then throw on the 1.6:1 roller rockers, lettin you add a LESS aggressive cam to take advantage of the faster valve speeds and getting even better low end torque...but that's for later!).

thats the best one ive seen yet. thanks. good point on the hot cam. didnt notice that.

grandsport.........very nice times. that motor is "completely " streetable?? not sure of the weight difference on the c4, mite be lighter a bit , might not. should be close though. i agree, the price of the zz383 is kinda steep. may talk to a buddie of mine that races alcohol dragster and see what he thinks. 5 grand should build a monster of a motor.

thanks again for the support fellas. gotta love this place. best regards, j.d.

I'd have to disagree about crate motors not being good enough for 12's. We have a ZZ4 in our 82 with a 650 holley, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, and 1.6 ration rockers and we run 13.2-13.1 on it at 99mph. We're adding the fastburn heads and a hotcam and hope to get mid 12's out of it NA. I think that the fastburn engine could get 12's, and the 383 fastburn should have no problems. Get a ZZ4 fastburn engine, then put a hotcam in it and I think you'll be more than pleased. Our ZZ4 as it sits has a very smooth idle and most people wouldn't know that it wasn't just a normal Vette with an exhaust.

Can you put a TPI set up on one of these engines? Not the stock Chevy, but the aftermarket TPIS big mouth or superam. That would be the ultimate as far as I'm conerned!

Heh, heh...
That's exactly what I just ordered...
I got a ZZ4 with FastBurn heads and Edelbrock MPFI (ProFlo, I believe)...all preinstalled...including shipping was like $6200...can't wait to try it out.
Guys will say, "the RamJet has about the same hp and is EFI"...but look at the components...ZZ4 is much better made, AND will fit under a stock L48 hood (after you buy a new hood, paint it...RamJet ain't really no cheaper than the ZZ4 anyway...)

I know that GM is expensive.. but $6200 for a small block is quite a bit...
