The previous owner of my 1970 had a 305C.I. with HEI ignition installed, why I have no idea. I have removed the 305 and am getting ready to install a 350 with original ignition system. All of the wiring was changed to allow the HEI to work. I am in need of instructions on how to wire the new (original) points coil and distributor. I bought a wiring diagram that helps most of the time, but with the way the wiring has been screwed up for the HEI I need very specific instructions. Please Help!
There are 2 basic differences. The power feed wire to the coil is a regular wire for HEI and a resistor wire with points. If you don't have the resistor you will burn up the coil and points. Either get the correct wire, or an aftermarket resistor (MSD has them, for instance).
The second difference is there was a wire from the starter to the coil. This supplied full voltage during cranking to make it start easier.
I quite like my points setup. PITA to adjust but quite reliable. After 24 years sitting, the old Accell dual points setup has run flawlessly for well over a year now. She has never failed to start in temps from 45 degress to 100+. She has sat for as long as 3 weeks.
