Default Cam Lope

I was just wondering; What causes the engine to lope?

I always thought it was the duration of the cam.

Is more the lift, duration, or a combination of both that causes the sweet sound of engine lope?

It's the duration and thus the overlap that makes it lopey. Basically, the longer the duration, the more the valves are open past BDC (intake) and TDC (exhaust). This makes the cam/engine more efficient at higher rpms, but idle quality is sacrificed.

The centerline of the cam also plays into this as it will affect the overlap. As you can see here http://www.compcams.com/Base/Images/...ration-002.gif Long duration and narrow separation gives you that nice rumpity-rump.
