Default 68 coil bracket question.

The coil is presently tie tied to a bracket on the firewall. I just got this bracket and other used parts from a used Vette dealer.

Note the angle the coil will be at if inserted almost horizontal. Also notice the open end of the one bolt hole.

Now check out the orignal equipment from the Paragon website.
Note that the clip is more upright and neither hole has a open end bolt hole.

Now here is a close to stock 72 LT-1 engine.

Notice how the coil sits inside the coil is almost vertical. I think this is either the wrong bracket or it's bent downward. Please let me know what you think.

David, I don't know if it is any help to you or not but the coil bracket on my 70 small block holds the coil at an angle. You should have a little dimple on the ignition shielding that kicks out to go over the coil. My bracket also has the slot in one end. FWIW.

Eddie I currently have no ignition shielding, in the works, are you telling me mine looks like yours. See Paragon pics above, they supposedly cover 68-73.

look above at the 2 paragon pics. It appears to be the same part taken at slightly different angles???????????

Paul you seem to have two carb spacer plates on that intake. What gives?

Forget the grey gasket on top. That belongs on my aluminum intake. For the cast iron there are actually three layers. The first is a gasket with the heatslot cutout. It is on the intake and I would have to scrape it off. Next is the metal plate that blocks off the heat slot. Finally is another gasket to cushion and seal the base of the carb. With this example a Holley of course. We have discussed that difference before.

Hi David, That looks like the correct coil bracket, It does sit at about a 20-30 degree angle. Just in case - I have a New stock coil if you need one, I used an MSD coil for alittle better spark. Talk to you later! Anthony..... :chevy

The bracket I have for my 427/390 looks like the Paragon bracket you pictured. The one for the tripowers have an angle cut in them to clear the ignition shielding which is a bit different because of the triangular air cleaner. I've not seen a bracket like yours with the slot cut in the one bolt hole. That doesn't mean it's not original, though. Maybe Paul B or 68rdstr will chime in. They know a lot about the '68 small block cars.

Well last night before you all posted i decided in my own wisdom that the bracket and angle of the coil was way too much and rebent the legs it sits on. After painting it I installed it and the bracket hit against the distributer cap and could not get the outside bolt started. So I took the dremel and cut out the outer hole to allow me to place the bracket further from the distributer cap and still be able to get the bolt started. Well it worked and the coil sits like the paragon brackets pictured above however I should have left it alone and never bent it. I think the bending made it come in contact with the distributer cap and require the enlarging of the bolts holes and now it looks like if I ever order the chrome shielding the coil will be in the way. It works for now but the bracket is .08 from the widest section of the distributer cap. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy.

When I bought my '70, Bubba had a generic GM bracket, straight up. It took me a while to figure out but it placed the coil in perfect position to short out against the air cleaner base. :cuss I'm now using the angled SB bracket. I had to tap a new hole in the intake and enlarge the bracket holes to fit my Holley intake.
